I have a couple of Hein-Gericke soft panniers you could use if you're desperate. Also a tank bag.

One downside to using your phone GPS. If they also rely on cell service to load, then good luck in parts of WV that are dark areas for cell service. I was travelling in a car using Waze when I missed a turn, so it had to recalc, but since it didn't have cell service it lost it's mind and ended up re-routing me back to where it last had service - and that was a long way back.

Many GPS apps have offline map capability. Some even have offline navigation capability (the one I use, Locus Maps, does). I haven't needed cell service to navigate any of my back country rides for several years now.
What a dedicated nav has over a cell phone is offline point-to-point navigation, better screen brightness, and possibly better point of interest database. But like I said, my preferred app, Locus Maps, has all of the same functionality plus MUCH more, you're just limited by the hardware you decide to run. I recently replaced my Kyocera Duraforce Pro ($50 off ebay) with an LG V50 ThinQ 5G ($125 off Swappa), it's got a huge screen which is plenty bright in sunlight, has wireless charging, is waterproof, and has enough onboard storage space to store offline maps/nav for the entire world.

Yeah we'll probably be using Maps.Me and Gaia GPS.
I'll have to check out Locus Maps.

Boo. Gaia is 40 bucks a year if I want to download maps for offline use.
And I couldn't find Locus Maps for iOS
Maps.Me is good to go so I'll be going with that for now.
I do have an old Garmin Nuvi that I suppose I could bring & stick in the clear map pocket of my tank bag. I'll consider whether or not I want to take that as a back-up.

I've traveled all over the US and Canada using TomTom Go app on my Samsung phone. Probably something like 60k miles. You download the maps which is offline. No data signal needed. Also allows GPX files to be loaded in for custom routes.

I use osmAnd maps on iphone. Download the states I'm traveling in. Haven't used anything else for GPX, so nothing to compare it to.

they do take up space, but fit easily into a side case and are thin enuf to not really take up space. I have one for every state I've been in, when I go to a new state, I buy one for that state.
I don't have to toot my horn about how many miles I ride in a day, anybody who has been around here vere long knows the miles I can put on, and my ability to review an atlas in the morning, and ride good low traffic roads all day

Now do it two up while living off a motorcycle for 2 weeks. Storage space goes quick. Nice little magic box attached to the bars is super nice to have, especially in the middle of nowhere when plans can suddenly change due to wx etc....
I'd also wager a good percentage of this forum doesn't know how to use a map in the first place

Gaia GPS is pretty cool for other uses too…especially hiking when using all the available map overlays that can show property lines and lines showing the path you’ve walked, etc.
Bumpiddy...
Still on the look-out for a pair of Sena comms.
(I still have my super old Cardos which will do in a pinch but their battery lifespan is pretty limited from old age.)

I'd just buy new bold's or blacks...they're invaluable for any long big bike ride.
Set 'em up in your street bike helmets and you'll use them for many years to come. The new ones also just work. older/cheap/used sena stuff is just a crapshoot.
