Goin on a two week moto trip... need some equipment

Sept 2nd Sylwia and I are leaving for a two week long ride & we're looking to either purchase or (if possible) borrow a couple of things. It's a very short list as of right now, but I'm sure we can all collectively come up with things to add as our departure date nears.

1: A pair of better communicators... I currently have a VERY old (I'm talkin 2008 here) pair of Cardo Scala Rider Q2s... they get the job done but I'd like something that actually has some more modern technology. If anyone have a couple of Sena headsets I could borrow, that'd be fantastic.

2: 12v Tire pump (Pref SAE, one that can plug into a battery tender lead) Purchased!

3: Maybe a Garmin Navi or something? We'll have our phones (AT&T and Verizon) but a standalone may prove to be more utilitarian.

Re: Goin on a two week moto trip... need some equipment

I'd suggest just buying both as they're great to have. I recommend coms that can play music simultaneously while you talk, it really helps with any slab. We recently got Cardo Packtalk Bold but I also still have and use my Sena 20s for group rides. I think we can use one phone to play music to both sets but she just listens to her stuff off her phone and I listen to mine.

I forgot what brand my 12v pump is but a few guys I ride with use the battery powered pumps now to air down/up on rides, believe they just bought off amazon with decent reviews. Probably a more convenient option if you can remember to keep it charged.

After searching, I can't for the life of me find the 12v pump I bought but it's very similar to this one and lives under my seat: https://www.ebay.com/itm/29467078907...Bk9SR-6xnrnZYA

    Good stuff, thanks.

Yeah we'll prob end up buying at some point, but we both suffer from Chronic Analysis Paralysis

After looking it up, I paid a whopping 240 bucks for my old Cardo headsets. I definitely got (and am still getting) my money's worth out of them, but I think it's time we officially retire them. It'd be nice to be able to pair up & talk to more riding buddies.

Re: Goin on a two week moto trip... need some equipment

I believe I had your same cardo scala rider and sold it to someone on here. I then went with the Sena SMH10 for ~10yrs or so before getting the Sena 20s. I thought the SMH10 was amazing compared to the scala rider. Then I got the the 20s, which does everything I could want riding solo or with limited riders: play music simultaneously, headphone jack connection, long battery, easy to use. I actually prefer riding with earbuds when I found out my preferred earplug manufacturer makes a corded earplug with a speaker in it -- improves battery life and sound quality/quantity of music and voices while not completely eliminating outside noise.

I just purchased the Cardo bc one of my riding groups uses it and the mesh is amazing. I can add an adapter that sits on the bike to gain mesh for the Sena 20s, which is also amazing, but the mesh is leaps and bounds better when it comes to rider-to-rider pairing/talking, especially with larger groups and/or riding in varied terrain. I just wish Sena Mesh and Cardo mesh could work together otherwise I would've gotten a newer Sena with mesh or just use the Sena mesh adapter

I will say, I like how the Cardo Packtalk allows you to remove the mounting clip on the outside of the helmet but retain the speakers and mic inside the helmet. I use the same helmet for street and track and it makes it easier to swap between the two without rewiring the speakers/mic.

Bring spare fuses for the pump/sae connector. I've had some that would randomly pop the fuse on startup. Or bring a C02 inflator kit.

This is EXACTLY what I like most about my old school Cardo. Swapping the full set-up from helmet to helmet is a quick & easy 1-2 minute process. Comes in VERY handy when I'm doing 1-on-1 instruction at the track. Whatever I convert to, that's a valuable attribute that isn't often talked about or considered by manufacturers all that much compared to all the other technical features.

Re: Goin on a two week moto trip... need some equipment

I recently bought a Motopumps tire inflator, came in super handy on my NEBDR trip
Discount to ADV members here https://advrider.com/f/threads/motop...#post-42961120

For a street bike trip, I have a plug kit with a CO2 inflator for emergency use. For a dualsport trip, where I might be airing up/down the pressures more often, I’ll bring the 12v inflator.

Funny, I randomly stumbled upon the same pump on ebay that I posted earlier. I'm on ADVrider too so might have to pick up another so I don't have to move it between bikes so much but still considering a small rechargeable pump.

I can check to see if I have some Sena SMH10 kits laying around you can use to try out. I bought them used off ADVRider for my parents and came with 4 helmet kits & 2 units. If I can find them I can bring them to NHMS this weekend if you’re poking around or stop by on my way to NYST next Thursday morning.

Edit: disregard. I only have spare helper clamps & mics. No working communicators or speakers.

Camel backs in the tank bag are nice for staying hydrated.

Yeah, we'll be doing a lot of camping along the way, so we'll have water bladders & even my HydroBlu Versa Flow water filter system.

This. Makes a huge difference being able to take a drink whenever… as opposed to having to pull over, take gloves off, take helmet off, open the luggage, take out a water bottle, etc.

    Just added to the list:

3: Maybe a Garmin Navi or something? We'll have our cell phones (AT&T and Verizon) but a standalone may prove to be more utilitarian.

If you don't need access to offline navigation, a cell phone is perfectly adequate for displaying offline maps. Check out Gaia GPS sometime.

Longest I've done is day rides... Syl's ridden up to Nova Scotia solo before, but this is a two week long moto camping adventure that'll span somewhere in the neighborhood of 3k miles through some epic landscapes. Exact route still to be determined... Start & end points are locked in, but won't be revealed until a later date.

Well the camping stuff is what I was getting at. All our stuff is lightweight and compact, kinda fits the same bill. Our tent and sleep systems are under 14 lbs total etc. etc.

Re: Goin on a two week moto trip... need some equipment

Oooo...track Oreo branching out to other areas of moto...most awesomeness!

for street GPS, honestly most people just use their phones. Google maps to search things, divert from traffic, and easy turn by turn directions. Don't use an X-grip with the rubber netting as it sucks to toss a $1,000 phone down the road when you hit a rail road crossing at speed; the Perfect Squeeze if you'll be doing some off roading, or a lot of street bike bro's like the quadlock/rockform systems. If you do, vibration dampeners are recommended (but not a silver bullet) to protect the camera from vibrating apart. Soft luggage tank bags also work as they protect the phone from all vibration/weather/rain; I just hate looking down at the tank for even a moment. Pre-wire power to the phone in advance; be aware they are prone to fail so buy high quality parts (and possibly replaceable parts as a backup. Ie. get a 12v socket w' a cigg lighter plug w' USB in it. If that part fails, you can stop at any gas station to swap out the plug w' the usb). Bring a battery jump box that has USB plugs as a backup charger; and it also works to charge the Cardo's when you're stopping for lunch. I try not to futz with phones too much while riding, as it distracts me from the dangers of street riding, so another option, if you're so inclined, is phone tucked away and GPS in the comms. The phones with Gaia or Rever or any other app will display GPX tracks that you can email to each other. Your cell phone and your riding buddy are your SOS devices.

^^ that should cover everything if you're on road

the next gold standard if you're riding off road is Garmin. The Montana 600/660 is a brick and durable. You have to load all your tracks with a laptop in advance. It does not do turn-by-turn navigation; the line is there and you just follow it. It is weather proof and uses satellite so you don't need cell phone signal. The 700 is the newest one, easier to see, and solves the dim backlight problem in direct sunlight from the 600 series. It's somewhat tedious, but necessary if you're all off road. They also make one that also has the SOS device with a satellite connection if you need to contact search and rescue. I prefer the navigation on the bars and the SOS on the body (using an InReach mini) so if you get tossed off the bike, and have an injury that keeps you from getting back to the bike, you reach over your shoulder and grab the button for SOS. everything in this paragraph is if you're off roading and no cell signal.

Obviously the rest is your preference; tons of rider blogs on touring setup. Quality base layer for all temps (hot or cold), standard moto top/bottom, a rain shell (which doubles as cold weather insulation) and 2 sets of gloves (heavy and light). A tank bag w' a rag to wipe the visor and a cleaning solution. Spend time in the garage to make sure the bikes are 100% maintained so you don't have to bring the kitchen sink of tools on the trip. Just basic stuff to get you home (8/10/12mm, tire plug kits & CO2 cartridges, pump, zip ties, JB quick steel, mini 1st aid kit from amazon), GU energy packets, hydration pack filled at each gas station, sunglasses, mini jump box for dead batteries, bungee net, extra boxers/socks/toothbrush/credit card, LED headlamp. you can typically buy stuff on the road too.
