    Aprilia RS660

    Hmmmm

Aprilia says the 660 is a parallel twin unit derived from the 1100cc that powered the Tuono 1100 and the RSV4 1100 Factory

I like the concept, the lighter the better. But parallel twins are probably my least favorite engine configuration

Same here. I'm puzzled by this trend.

    Re: Aprilia RS660

that's sexy. I'm ok with a parallel twin. At least if it has that "kind of dirt bike-y" feel to it.
If I were in the market, I'd love to see the 660 tuono version of this with upright bars and mostly naked.

    Re: Aprilia RS660

Any thought from the suspension guru's on the choice to eliminate the a rear shock linkage and mount the shock directly to the swingarm (a la KTM PDS.) Anyone have any example of this being done on sport bikes previously? At face value I would think this wouldn't perform as well as a linkage system. In theory I suppose you could accomplish similar performance with a progressively sprung shock spring, but still wouldn't account for the linkage traveling in an arc.

Anyhow, just armchair quarterbacking the whole thing.

There have been successful linkless roadrace bikes. The Ducati supermono comes to mind. The trend in aftermarket links is... flat rates.

    Aprilia RS660

All Ducati Super Sports... Kawi 650 twin... ya big dummy. The Paton twin in the UK has twin shocks like 70’s bikes!

Too bad we never got them here.

My only experience with P twins is an EX500 and GS500e. Exhaust always sounded terrible.

I think they're inexpensive to produce - not as cheap as a single (which doesn't suit this application), but much cheaper than an I4 or V2 or especially V4

    Re: Aprilia RS660

Yup. Basically take a single and make it wider. It also allows for a much longer swing arm than a V- or L-twin... which should bode well for sporting handling.

    I think its a V4 cut in half -

Aprilia says the 660 is a parallel twin unit derived from the 1100cc that powered the Tuono 1100 and the RSV4 1100 Factory. Aprilia says “this configuration was chosen for its compact nature and efficiency, the extremely low level of heat transmitted to the rider and for the freedom that it leaves the designers to create a sleek and lightweight frame and suspension.”

Be interesting to see where this lands on both the price and reliability spectrum. I think this will attract a lot of people wanting a Ninja 650/ SV650 but with actual useful technology and much, much better looks.

I would not go near a first year Aprilia, in fact I wouldn’t even go for a second or third year model. They are slow to work out the bugs.
Cool looking bike tho for sure.

Yeah, the active aero on that thing malfunctions and you are airborne before you know it!

Yeah, the 2019 RSV4 is kind of overlooked but wow has that bike come a loooooong way. From like 150 rwhp to 200+ in 10 years of development.

A bit more on potential info via the Cycle World article. Target is 100 horsepower with a 330 pound curb weight. That's tasty.

    Re: Aprilia RS660

I saw that HP target. It's not adding up. KTM 790 territory. KTM doesn't leave much HP on the table. with 130ccs less, it's a tall order. But 90ish is still repectable.
