    Grom Adventure Bike Build

A lot of people love them, Iíve read threads on ADVRider on them.

Anyone local do something crazy with their grom/Z125s?

They seem absolutely silly as an adventure bike but the idea of not being very highway friendly makes for more backroad experiences & journeys.

I have a KLR for now and it has nothing fun going for it and would like to change it up for the most fun for 2021.

    Found this picture for inspiration

    Re: Grom Adventure Bike Build

I had a Grom two years ago and currently have a Z125.
The only adventures I’ve had on them though has been commuting to work, or riding to my buddy’s house across town for a beer.
Silly fun <50mph and super easy to ride.
The 2021 Groms got a 5 speed, a tiny bit more oomph, and went back the flat seat. I would start there if you’re buying. Resale value on used models has been really high this year.

I haven’t paid any attention to these things since not buying one, but does that 5spd yield any extra sustainable mph?

As one of the beer buddies listed above, I've almost warmed up to the idea of one. For less than $1500 im in. but i cant imagine spending 3k plus for something that limited in use.

Now with my new job being 2.9 miles from home. i've toyed with the idea of getting one.

Honda claims increase of top speed from 54 to 59 mph.

For reference: My Z125 which is stock, I think I’ve topped it out about an indicated 58 mph.
My 2015 Grom, which had intake/exhaust/PC, I once saw 62/63 on the speedometer on a flat road before I came up on traffic. Never tried any higher.
I’m about 195 lbs plus gear.
So I am assuming that yes, the new model will be good for a little extra top speed.

when we did mini racing at OVRP with Cole, we saw pretty big difference with the exhaust on the grom. I dont remember the exact numbers but it was noticeable

    Re: Grom Adventure Bike Build

since my Grom has gearing, i installed the Grom version of a speedohealer to correct the MPH. with an intake, exhaust, and 225lbs sitting on it, i've hit 63 MPH going down hill. i could probably squeeze a few more if i didnt have -1/+3 gearing.

now that i have a cam, ECU flash, and installing the clutch mods with removes the 2.25 pound oil spinner, i should see some faster top speeds.

Having a big bike max out at 70 is way less fun than a little bike at 70.

Any long hauls on it (~1+hr rides) without issues?

Interesting. First time I heard about the 5spd.

Mine regularly will be doing between 60 and 65 full tuck on the highway mostly stock. Ive hit rev limiter at 73 drafting and going downhill on the highway on many occasions.

I always said if it can do 65/70mph comfortably it would be pretty perfect (needs a big bore kit etc). For the 65mph highway trips.

Otherwise around town perfect bike. Also works well on 55mph highways.

    Always 100mpg.

Had mine as one of the first deliveries to the country on pre order. Loved it then. Love it now.

the 2021 Grom has a 5 speed transmission and i believe the new engine is 9.7hp, compared to the 8hp engine in the 2013-2020 models.

That doesn't sound right (hp wise). I believe they've had the 9.7 throughout. Here is a link to 2016 article and every other year seems to show the same thing

If I’m being totally honest, if you’re forcing me to use a Honda 125 for an adventurey type somethingorother, it’s gonna be the cub or the trail125, not the grom.

they're 8hp 2013-2020. easy to bump it up quickly. intake, exhaust, cam, and ECU flash brings it to 12.5hp. that's about $400

Where are you getting your information from?

Here is the spec brochure from 2014

    7.2kw = 9.6 hp

this article specifically says that the manufacture brochures never list wheel hp for these bikes, and include dyno results.

also, the 2021 is said to have 9.7hp which is more than the 13-20 models. they wouldnt make it a big announcement if it was only a 0.1hp gain from previous generations.

So where are you getting the higher wheel HP numbers for a bike that hasn't come out yet? The 2021 listing is same crank hp.

I'm aware that manufacturer doesn't list whp. It listed crank 9.7 old model they are listing crank 9.7 new model.

By your logic Honda will be listing new bike as crank 12hp model in their brochures. I fail to see that and you fail to provide proof of your claims.

i've read the 2021 is 9.7hp to the wheel, not crank. the older ones were already around there to the crank.

This whole back and forth can easily be avoided if you just link me to the source of this claim. (9.7 wheel dyno hp)

Hard to argue with proof. Easy to question claims.

    Re: Grom Adventure Bike Build

The peak power and torque are largely unchanged
    https://www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocia...-grom-for-2021

. Honda claims a peak power of 9.7 hp, the same as the previous Grom, but it arrives there slightly later at 7250 rpm versus the previous 7000 rpm. The new Grom, however, sees a slight dip in torque, peaking at 7.7 lb-ft. at 5500 rpm compared to the previous model’s 8.0 lb-ft. at 5500 rpm. Naturally, the new engine meets Euro 5 emissions standards.
