    Grom Engine Swap

Has anyone done or know someone who has tried swapping the motor on a brom for something different?

    I'm thinking maybe 125cc 2 stroke maybe?

    Any ideas? Comments? Concerns?

    Re: Grom Engine Swap

I haven't heard of anything yet, but I'm sure somebody's in the process. I think height would be the challenge, since the Grom motor is horizontal. I'll take some dimensions from my 150 motor and compare to the space in the frame.

Modding the stock motor gets expensive quickly, so it may be worth looking into a swap.

    kitaco cover/spinner delete $240
    170srd bbk $350
    koso cam $100
    DIY intake mods $20
    IXIL full system $300
    koso AFR guage $100
    Dobeck DJK piggyback tuner $200

Thank god I suck at Addition! I still need to have my head ported $300 if I want to see the true potential unlocked. It's currently night and day from stock, but I would't say it's a fast bike.

    Re: Grom Engine Swap

the 150SX motor would require a ton of fabrication. 16" to the top of the plug, puts it up in the middle of the fuel tank. On the Grom, the motor IS the lower frame rail. Somebody would have to basically make a new frame from the headstay back. I bet we'll see some 100cc Supermini Groms before 125/150s.

Did you ever think you'd long for the power of a cbr250r? Haha!

If you don't keep on top of the maint with an accelerated schedule, you'll find the motor suddenly failing very frequently no matter how much TLC you put in after.

I speak from experience on building these motors. When you go big: Throw oil at them frequently, change the filters often. Even then it's going to beat itself up but you can postpone it for a bit.

Seriously though. overpowering a short wheelbase mini is a recipe for injury. I have never understood the hopped up mini craze. It's not fun to ride a bike that want's to spin like a top instead of going forward.

You never rode my 70 at NHMS then. It is fun. Short wheelbase but also much lower COG, it really didn't want to wheelie save for hard direction changes while on the gas. Closest feeling I can imagine would be an RS125 with torque amongst big bikes. You've got roll speed, can charge out of the corner but no mass to hustle when making direction changes.
