Ticket #1. (It was Newburyport, to be expected I guess.)

Although I did say to him, "Umm, dude, Harley's are WAY louder...".

"Yeah, those are Harley's though. Is this under 80 decibels?" <-- WTF so Harley's are exempt??

"Well, I haven't *personally* measured it. Do *you* have equipment like that at home sir?"

    "License and registration please."

Then he proceeded to extended his baton to 3 feet and ram it up my completely unobstructed rear end.

Oh well. Small price to pay when cagers actually change lanes AWAY from me because of the noise, and I can see them looking around when I'm 8 cars back. I forgot to tell him about that part though.
I don't care how loud your bike is - there was no reason to put his 3 foot long baton up your ass.

In all seriousness try using a couple of "sirs" and get humble. "Sorry sir but my baffle came out on the hi-way, I will have a new one by tomorrow" and not ""Well, I haven't *personally* measured it. Do *you* have equipment like that at home sir?"

Newburyport sux period! When I was riding Harleys, I got a ticket for loud exhaust there too. They were sitting on the corner just waiting for bikes to come by with their stupid decibal reading gun... pathetic.
I have never and will never ride in Newburyport again...

    And fuck Michaels Harborside too!

    asking for a ticket

For many years I rode with a D &D or old Vance and Hines pipe 1985 -1997 3 gsxrs and a Fj 1200. Then after my going through many stops at least two a year. One in maine at gunpoint. I bought a bike with a stock pipe. I stopped being ticketed for speeding. A few warnings that is it. I realized that I was alerting the police with noise so they could set up on me. From people that do not ride I have heard comment on how much they want bikes off the road usally after they hear one ride by with a loud pipe motocycle brand or type of bike is not a factor they just want the noise to go away.I am amazed that sportbike riders would jump on the loud pipes save lives argument that argument mostly comes out of a beer soaked bros. Stealth is the way to go

A Decibel is a measure of sound pressure . This is the wave's amplitude (height). It is a logarithmic scale. Every 10db is heard as twice as loud (in other words double the pressure). Sound pressure is measured with a decibel meter and can be quantified.
I know what frequency and db are. I'm doing my phd work in acoustics. Maybe I should have been more clear. Also, that post was made at 1am and I was drunk

About the dB, you're right in the human audio range, however note that some people work in pressure dB, some work in power, some work in other quantities. Thus, the amount of dB required to double the pressure can be 3, 6, 10, etc. depending on the quantity you're looking at. Many VSAs will use RMS Volts^2 as their input, for example. Another example, in acoustics/ultrasonics you often will characterize a transducer (sound source) by describing the focal point of sound bounded by its 3dB (or 6dB depending on units) down points at some given distance. This tells you how large of a spot of sound it will create at that distance with the circumference of the spot marking where the pressure (or power) has dropped to half of its initial value.

What I mean to tell Kham that the dB rating of various frequencies of sound would be the same if the sound waves themselves were of the same amplitude, but they would be perceived as different amplitudes by the human ear because the response of the human ear drum is not flat in the frequency domain. i.e. it has the typical 'bell-shaped' Gaussian distribution with it's resonant frequency around the frequencies slightly above normal human voice.

    Here are some examples:
0-Faintest sound heard by human ear.

    30-Whisper, quiet library.

    60-Normal conversation, sewing machine, typewriter.

90-Lawnmower, shop tools, truck traffic; 8 hours per day is the maximum exposure to protect 90% of people.

100-Chainsaw, pneumatic drill, snowmobile; 2 hours per day is the maximum exposure without protection.

115-Sandblasting, loud rock concert, auto horn; 15 minutes per day is the maximum exposure without protection.

140-Gun muzzle blast, jet engine; noise causes pain and even brief exposure injures unprotected ears. Maximum allowed noise with hearing protectors.

Note that Zero is the faintest sound detectable by the human ear. This means sound waves can have negative db ratings, but they are too quiet for us to hear them.
If all you care about is conventions and the human range, this is fine. But don't forget that dB is essentially the strength of something compared to a REFERENCE, i.e. it is usually the pressure of the signal divided by some reference pressure. This reference pressure is usually 1 micropascal in water, 20 micropascals in air, and there are various other standards. Thus, when the signal is equal to the reference, the argument is 1 and the log is 0.

Also, since air and other media are NOT lossless, the reference also needs to be given with a distance. In air it's usually 1 meter.

Tell that to the cop, since I'm sure the jackass won't know how far he needs to hold his db-meter from the sound source in order to get an accurate reading.

    Good posts btw, Peter.

hell yeah... 4 years of sport riding so far and I think I've only gotten one speeding ticket. Love them stock exhausts (though I"m looking to change that on my current bike... the stocker is just too damn big & ugly.)

A couple of years ago I was stuck in bumper to bumper traffic in Newburyport in my full leathers on a 90+ degree day. I was extremely uncomfortable and needed something to drink so I went around 2 cars in the break-down lane (traffic had not moved in 5 minutes) to pull into a convenience store parking lot. One of Newburyport's finest was coming out of the store and started yelling at me for being reckless and ended up giving me a ticket for a right lane violation.

Fortunately the court magistrate was reasonable and found me not responsible.

Ok, is it a full Hindle system? If so, just order a 20" long "Stealth" muffler{1 3/4" core dia.} and be done with it. I run the 18" 2' core dia. muffler on the track, and the Stealth on the street. I like a good sound character, but I don't need the decibels. Trust me, the noise issues aren't going to go away.
Being a little proactive about it isn't going to kill you.
