Health Insurance Question...I want to race this weekend.

    So,

Long story short, I have not had health insurance for the past couple months.

After some serious fire lighting I got my work to open up the benefits enrollment for me today. I set up everything, but it is going to take until Monday for it to get approved. Once approved, I will have coverage dating back until 9/17.

My question lies in if I crash and end up in the hospital this weekend, will I be able to put the bill through to my insurance since I will technically have coverage at the time of the accident, once it gets approved. I would have no problem calling them up and asking them, but putting a hypothetical situation about me racing motorcycles may not get them too thrilled.

    Thoughts?

Unless I get a definite answer I probably will err on the side of caution on this one.

Re: Health Insurance Question...I want to race this weekend.

Meh. Opinion and conjecture only. No definite answer.

Is there any reason you would be declined coverage? Since you mention this is through work, it's really (really) hard for them to decline you. As long as there are no pre-existing conditions, the approval through group plans is normally a rubber stamp.

Since your coverage is retroactive you should be covered. The "fly in the ointment" will be what happens when you show up at the ER (not saying you will, just as an example).

They ask for your insurance card... No havie...
Ok, who's your ensurer? (Company name).
    Group ID? No havie...
OK, we'll look you up on their systems... Ummm, uhhh, well... ya see...

This could leave you "owing" a large bill.

All that said, it should still be possible for you to submit the ER bills to the insurance company, since your coverage is retroactive, but it's likely to be a pain in the arse. Most of my dealings with health insurance have proven to be a horrible pain in the arse.

Do what my wife says. Don't Crash .
Just stay out of the pit bike races and you should be fine

I'd prolly run, but that's easy for me to say, as I'm not a racer .

I'm sure that I am in the minority here, but my recommendation is to be a spectator this weekend (like me!).
You mention that it still needs to be approved. If you suffer a serious injury, they have a very easy decision to make... they will deny your coverage.
Follow your instincts here and sit this one out... you have a lot to lose with little to gain.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm fairly certain that would be FUCKING ILLEGAL.

Health Insurance Question...I want to race this weekend.

Why would they backdate your coverage if they weren't going to take care of any injuries sustained between 9/17 and now?

As long as you are certain they will approve you, I would race.

I work for a health insurance company, i am not "allowed" to give the name out on public forums. I get this question everyday, I can tell you in the states i work for (NY,NJ,CT) If you are enrolled on 10/15 with an effective date on lets say 9/15. Your claims WOULD be covered (as long as it is not a excluded benefit you are using meaning it would never be covered)

YES OREO THAT WOULD BE SUPER ILLEGAL

Hes got it correct, the only thing that would screw you now would be your Boss not paying the bill, or a stupid clericle mistake on his part (as easy as not signing the form)

Ummmm ... while it is illegal to deny the claim IF he is enrolled in the insurance, from what he is describing he is not yet enrolled. What happens if the terms of the enrollment change between now and Monday? The insurance company CAN come back to his company and say no we are not retroactively giving him insurance benefits without proof he isn't going to hit us with a claim day 1, BUT we will give it to him starting today. Also - ever try getting things paid by an insurance company retroactively? Oh you'll get your money .. 6 months from now.

Way to much liability here in my opinion. While the temptation to race is always high, I would recommend sitting this one out.

Guys... we're dealing with the insurance industry. They do not like to pay out claims, especially a hefty medical bill.
Again, JetttaJay has stated that approval is pending... this is where they have an out if something happens. They can come up with a lengthy list of excuses unrelated to this weekend for denial.
If you feel there is little risk, it's your call.

    This is my fear.

I sent the request for enrollment today, approval takes 24-48 hours so Monday is when I will receive approval. From what I've been told by HR, they have no "pre-existing illness" caveats for their insurance policies. That being said: if I incur a hospital bill dated 10/6 and my coverage is not activated until 10/8, will they pay out since my coverage will be dated as of 9/17?

Only issue here is if a bone is sticking out of my leg or I wake up in a hospital. I raced the past two weekends without insurance (not knowing) and crashed both times and was fine, but luck runs out.

Look at it this way I was covered by my insurance after my motorcycle crash in turn 4. But it was after 6 months of me fighting them.. do you really want to go through that while you're injured having to pay out of pocket?

Spectate. This is karma tapping you on the shoulder with a "heads up dude"

The world of financial hurt that is POSSIBLE is not worth the risk.

Spend the entry fees and gas/tire money on taking your significant other for a night out. They will respect your responsible decision and appreciate the night out. Win win. Major brownie points in the bank.

Dammit dammit dammit. I don't think I can do it.

This literally means I won't be riding a motorcycle until next May, god that sucks. There goes ROTY contention as well as any potential amateur points prizes. Still got two championships though, guess I can't be too upset. But I am.

See you all up there on Saturday anyway for moral support.
