    Anyone heard of this?

My neighbor John, God bless him, bought a Ducati 999R Xerox last year from BCM. But since day 1 he can't keep the friggin thing from stalling randomly.

BCM has had it in and out of their shop for over a year now, most recently John just got the thing back last Friday after BCM tore it apart again for the last 2 weeks. So he goes for an 11 mile ride yesterday and the damn thing stalled on him 3 times while he riding.

I don't know about you guys, but after spending $35k for the bike and throwing another $10K into it, (Like John) I wouldn't want to be looking my wife in the eye (Like John) and telling her I shoulda saved my $35k and bought a HONDA (Like John).

Any Ducati riders out there heard of this? I would assume it to do with a lean condition as delivered from the factory - and I also assume that BCM has checked this, so it must be something else.........

    Anyone heard of this?

it is a known issue with 999r's and even *some* 1098's. I'm not in the service dept so i don't know the exact details on what it may be, but i remember overhearing that its ECU related. Its strange as certain bikes will have these issue's haunt them, and other's will never have the problem ever. Though BCM is a group of great people. I'd tell your friend to speak to DNA (Ducati North America) directly, not to complain but to help speed up the process of getting something done in a more timely matter (or in rare cases get compensated for his troubles).

    Anyone heard of this?

I have heard about this problem from a couple of ducati forums and it's generally regarded to be ECU related. Has he tried simply reseating the ECU and checking the connectors for water contamination?

Sounds like he has the full exhaust system, race ecu etc, so I would start putting stock stuff back on (at Ducati's expense) and see whan the problem goes away.

Alternatively, I will do a straight swap with him for my perfectly-running 2003 999S with only 13k miles heh heh.

    Anyone heard of this?

Could it be as simple as a bad ground on the ECU or Battery?

Gas? No way. Not after a year of this trouble. As a matter of fact - today he went out and got on it thinking maybe he needed to "clean it out", and it started stuttering at 7000 rpm, then at 8000 rpm (@ 60MPH) it died again. A guy on a ZX10 pulled over and when John told him what happened - the guy just laughed.

After 40 something grand......tell me THAT doesn't suck.

The ECU thing sounds more like it to me.

Thanks for the input everyone.....I'll pass it on.

And if you see a XEROX stranded on the side of the road with a guy who looks pissed.....don't laugh (at least not in front of him).

No ECU swap - Kyle told him that the ECU recall doesn't apply, so they didn't swap it.
That doesn't make sense to me........

Sounds like something I remember hearing on a lot of the newer monsters... related to that stupid immobilizer BS ducati put on there as a theft deterrent...

Might be worth a look into the ignition/gauge cluster hum-dinger.

Ah, He's not a fool for having the issues he has with his bike, as that is not his fault. I truly feel sorry for him.

However, he is a fool for spending $40k on a friggin' motorcycle. My bike only cost me $5k, and it runs like a top.

    Anyone heard of this?

But I want to know, what do you get? What kind of laps can it put down at LRRS vs. a benchmark of say a GSXR750 with $2500k of exhaust, ECU map, tires, supension, chassis and brakework? Or vs. a 'stock' 999....?

I ask not because I am trying to be inflamatory but only because I want to know if it's more of an intangible vs. tangible difference than a base 999.

    Anyone heard of this?

    It's an intangible difference mostly.

I can put down faster laps on my stock cbr600 than I can on my 999S, but I get much more satisfaction from riding the 999s on the track.

If I could have any Ducati I want, I would take the 999R Xerox over the 1098 any day.

I wonder if they checked for the following errors in the ECU:

    Segmentation Violation
    Bus Error
    Array Index Out of Bounds

Very scary that we are now in the days were we might have to worry about these types of issues showing up in motorcycles! The ECU can only get so sophisticated before it's going to happen.
