    Heated gear???'s

So I'm going to break down and buy some heated gear this year, I rode last year through the winter w/o any.

My question is do people still use the liner that came w/there jacket in addition to the heated liner? Or do you replace the jackets liner with the heated one?

Also does anyone else find it absurd that you buy heated gear and you have to buy a controller too. I believe the lone exception is Tourmaster's synergy line?

I'd say keep your current liner if it still fits with the heated liner. The First Gear heated liner is a pretty good liner, quilted, high collar. Underneath it, Patricia sez, wear a thin layer, not cotton.

I got the dual controller and mount it where I can adjust liner and gloves while riding.

Just the liner is nice, but the whole shebang is much better. Heated collaris key, sleeves, gloves and socks are nice and chaps or windproof pants.

It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?

    depends how cold

once it gets below 75, I put my regular liner in my FG Kilmanjaro, below 60, I take it out and replace with my heated liner, below 20, I use both liners, at that point I also use both heated grip and heated gloves

i rode through the winter last year with just my unheated olympia jacket. But I really wish I had heated gloves. With "winter" motorcycle gloves, my hands only lasted about 15 mins before they got cold.

    Re: Heated gear???'s

I've got the Tourmaster Synergy heated vest. There are very few better ways of spending $100. It keeps me toasty warm even when it's well below freezing out -- almost always without the need to turn it up past medium.

When it comes to heated gear, think of it more like long underwear -- it should go underneath almost everything else to maximize the amount of heat getting to your body. A baggy fit wastes a lot of the heat, so buy it so it's snug-fitting. The Tourmaster vest has elastic side panels, so it's safe to buy a size smaller than you ordinarily would. I'm usually an XL at least, often XXL, but I bought my Synergy vest in L and it's perfect.

I'll usually wear the vest over a thermal undershirt, then a sweatshirt over the vest, a fleece vest over that (with standup collar that keeps my neck warm), then my leather jacket with its liner installed over that. That's comfortable for an all-day ride in 40-degree temps, and the vest usually stays on the low setting. If it's below 35 out I'll add a balaclava to keep my neck and chin warm and turn the vest's temp up as necessary. This keeps me perfectly comfortable even if it's in the teens out.

I've ridden my XR650L (no wind protection) without heated clothing when it was 5 degrees out, and by layering up I stayed warm enough, but the heated vest makes it so much easier -- pleasant even -- and I don't need to feel like the Michelin Man because I'm wearing a million layers.

Are there any local vendors that sell the Synergy gear? I'd love to try it on before buying.

    What size are you?
I'm about as local as you get. I just special ordered a Large one for one of the members here, but we really don't stock Synergy gear.
Maybe we'll get some more in if there's enough demand.
We are getting ready to do a group buy type of thing in the next 2 weeks on some heated gear and we'll have an open house of sorts for the NESR crowd.

make sure it fits snug ... loose liner doesnt work well as it has to hug the body

    Re: Heated gear???'s

I recently replaced my Gerbings jacket liner with a First Gear Warm n Safe liner

I like the improvement , more watts, 90 instead of 77, it heats up quicker, construction is a little better imho and zippers are same size as the regular liner for my FG Kilmanjaro. so it zips in like the regular liner if I'm not using the regular liner

Whitehorse Gear in Center Conway sells Tourmaster Synergy heated gear. Gloves, vests, liners, pants, controllers, etc. They have no problem with people trying stuff on. Give 'em a call at 603.356.6556 for winter hours.
