    help diagnose my problem!!

bought a used 09 zx6r with a minor fall on its left side (tank dented). bike starts up fine rides fine. in stop & go traffic the bike feels as though it's about to die. i try to keep the rev high and it dies. this only happens in 1st gear and during hot weathers. it was thought that the previous owner overfilled the oil and noticed what appeared to be an oil spill near the engine and lower left fairings. changed the oil & filled it to the correct level, went for a ride in 70 deg weather and heard the fan go on at about 216 deg then the bike dies, the red fi light blinks and i cant restart the bike until i stop, turn the key off and turn back on.

the dash does not throw a code and it seems to only happen in first gear and when it's hot outside. i've searched the kawi forums and have read similar stories but not on the 09's. it was said to be a bad ecu. my first thought would be the tip over sensor or kick stand sensor but it's only doing it in 1st gear in stop & go traffic. perhaps the idle needs to be bumped up a notch? anyone have similar problems?

Yea it's a bit low but u think that would cause it to die only in 1st gear? And not the other gears?

Probably a 3 to 5 mile ride in 70 deg weather before it reached 216?

I'd fill it to eliminate the possibility. And just for the peace of mind of knowing it's full.

The bike has an overheat fail safe. It will cut spark to 1 cylinder I think in 1st to prevent you riding with it too hot. Your problem is that the bike is getting too hot too quick. You're short on coolant for a reason. Try to find out why.

Degs I don't think theres a leak anywhere. Coolant might've just been low do to poor maintenance. Even if the coolant is low the radiator should be full right? Regardless I replace the coolant and see if that doesn't solve it. oh by the way can u fix a tank dent?

Jim and csmutty I'll do a complete drain of the coolant and burp it properly. Thanks guys

It probably dumped some coolant when it went down. They probably didn't fill it correctly or at all afterward. I believe there are a couple part outs on zx6r.com right now you could check for a new tank there. Btw if you don't mind me asking how do you like the bike otherwise?

Yea I'm not gonna replace an entire tank for a fist size dent. Doesn't bother my rising position at all.

I've owned an 05 cbr600rr and an 06 gsxr750 and I don't think I've felt more planted on a bike then the this zx6r. I'm 5'8" with an inseam of 30" just to give u a picture of how the bike fits. It's all stock parts at the moment and already feels great to me

You know some kid is gonna google "fluid" someday and find this thread and thanks to you, they will be Frustrated and misled. It's blinker fluid not blinder fluid... Get it right please

    Re: help diagnose my problem!!

filled the coolant today. it shut off in first leaving an incline driveway. went to fill gas and didnt shut off coming back. watched it at idle till the fan kicked on at about 215 degrees and it didnt shut off. put it in 1st gear and it sounded like it wanted to die. raised the idle slightly and its strong. looks good now but we'll see what happens in real hot weather. thanks again guys.

next on the to do list are the blinker fluids, muffler bearings and piston springs. canooter valve?? never heard of it so i assume i dont have 1. i'll pay someone for a quality canooter valve

    Throttle position sensor ?

You're saying it's fine after the idle RPM's ? What RPM's is the bike idling at?
