How do bike swaps work in MA?

I'm thinking about swapping my SV with someone who has a Yamaha WR250X. We both have the titles in hand, ready to go.

Do we just sign each title over and call it a day? Do I still have to go to the RMV and pay tax even though I didn't purchase the bike?

    I need some 'splainin.

You need to call insurance, and tell them what you are doing. You should then have 7 days to get your plate switched over to the new ride.

Then, since it is private party you need to go to the RMV, and bend over. 5% over that is.

Only time you get a tax break is when you are buying from a dealer, and trading in.

RMV doesn't have the best records for motorcycles, so a low bill of sale may help you here. They charge 5% of what is higher, your bill of sale, or what their computer shows. No way around it, no sense in yelling at the drone behind the computer. There is a number to call, and fight if you think you were over charged. They will want documents of why it is X instead of Y.

Good luck, but I'd rather have the SV, and a 450. 250 won't be fun after a few weeks.

Paying 5% would suck. Friggin pirates.

That's what I'm afraid of too. The alternate plan is to keep the SV and get a used DRZ or something similar in a few months. That way I have the SV for touring, and the DRZ for fun.

Again, nothing is set in stone, I just wanted to see what the procedure was.

The thing is that the state looks at it like you are selling your bike and buying another not "trading" so that is why you pay the tax. I just had to cough up my sales tax for the triumph it wasnt fun.

Except ride on the highway or go much more than 200 miles.

Don't get me wrong, its a cool bike, just not enough motor for the street.

30 miles each way on the highway?

Let me know how it holds up come this fall.

The SV is near bulletproof, requires almost no work, and the WRs require frequent fiddling.

The WR250X has insanely long service intervals. The first valve check is at 20k IIRC.

But yeah, the SV is probably WAY better on the highway, and is reliable as it gets.

I'll let you know. I beat the crap out of that bike. Am getting only 70MPG because of it.

You weren't thinking of making the WR your ONLY bike were you? After all it is only a dirt bike type thing. Not suitable for very long rides. Is a great bike if you have another, but if you only have 1 bike, I would hesitate to trade based on long term riding comfort.

Yes, I was thinking of doing that. That's the main reason I've reconsidered. I'm sure I could live with it for highway commuting during the week, but it would be really out of its element.
