they started parking bikes in the garage at the brigham and they had the parking attendants manually open the gate to keep this from happening

Not if there is a wall next to it. I tried to get into a garage once, with absolutely no room to go around. I was facing downhill, with a car behind me, trying to back up my 540 pound bike about 20 feet. It was not fun. The ticket machine kept saying "No car present", and I wanted to punch a hole in the damn thing. I've only made that mistake once.

Re: Got hit by a gate arm today

Okay,I think I'll let you guys in on the big picture here. The college in question is Umass Lowell. Umass Lowell is divided up into three seperate campuses, each in different parts of the city. There is the North Campus, East Campus, and South Campus. The North and East campuses both have reserved spaces for motorcycles, South does not. The incident happened on south campus.

When I first started going to this college in September, I started a thread about where to park on campus. I was told by a member here that on South Campus, bikes would park behind an old building. I started parking my bike behind this building on south, and within the first week, I was hassled by the campus PD for doing so.

After this I contacted the parking services a.k.a. UCAPS. UCAPS stated that while there was no secure bike parking on south, I was permitted to park my bike in the car commuter lots.
So for the next few weeks I parked in the commuter lots. But by the end of September, the gates got installed. I noticed the sign posted on all these gates and immediately notified UCAPS of them. I asked if they were going to ban motorcycles from the parking lot. I received, an e-mail from UCAPS stating that those warnings were put on the gates by the manufacturer and were only intended for gates that relied on underground sensors and ASSURED ME IN WRITING THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY GATES THAT WORKED WITH METAL SENSORS. They stated that the gates to enter required "badging in" with my student ID. they never mentioned the gate to exit, but because they assured me that they did not have any metal sensing gates, I assumed it worked via a motion sensor.
After this incident they are now changing there story even though I have proof that they lied to me.

I omitted this from the first post because I thought it made it too long, and that you guys wouldn't be interested that much anyway. But thanks to everyone for the support/ideas.

The gate I went through had a guard shack on one side, and a row of bushes on the other. I wasn't about to take my Sprint through the bushes!

Rossco, without specifically knowing the lot you are speaking to (I actually oversee the City of Lowell Garages that a lot of students park in) even with the card reader reading your ID badge the gate is still checking for vehicle presence by way of a loop.

Quick way to verify this: go up to the gate with no vehicle around and swipe your ID - see if the gate goes up (my bet is it will not). There should be two loops on entry and two more on exit. On entry one tells the gate that you are in front of it and the second is immediately inside the lot telling the gate that you have passed. Same deal on the way out.

The presence of the card reader should really only be to "arm" the gate to function so that not just anybody gets in. There should still be a loop.

No loops would equal lots & lots of damaged cars.

Basically, go get a Neodymium Magnet (rare earth) or buy one online for $20 and double stick tape it to the bottom of your bike.

Make sure you clean the surface well with alcohol and use a good double stick tape. Metal parts are usually alloys so they are not very good for holding a magnet by itself also magnets are easily dislodged with sheering forces (pushing on it sideways).

This will solve all of the issues people have mentioned here with not reliably triggering inductive sensor loops.
Not according to many people who have purchased them. Do you have one?

    Nope, I drive a Triumph.
They make motorcycles the way God intended, out of metal for the major parts, not that new fangled plastic, resin, carbon fiber or composites made out of rice. I don't have any trouble with parking garage gates or lights.

    The technology is sound though.
The sensor is looking for a change in current from the loop of wire imbeded in the pavement. This can be caused by a large ferrous metal object (car) or strong magnet passing over the coil of wire.

If it does not work for some people, I can only suggest that the company sold them a cheap, weak magnet or that the light that they are having trouble with uses a motion detector that is built into the light unit instead of a sensor loop installed into the pavement.
Tell them to flap their arms like a chicken as they pull up to the light.
If that doesn't work at least the other drivers will get a laugh out of it.

Umm...my Triumph never triggers stop lights! Maybe it's because I have a plastic-cladded Sprint ST!

Mine is better than my SV was, but I still have some instances where I can't trigger it (see my own gate story).

Just to add my own little bit of Gate Hate here: At the lot right outside my office they have a big sign with the No Bicycles, No Pedestrians, etc. on it.

And where do they place it? The motherfuckers wedge it into the space where you could skirt around the side of the gate! I am on my bicycle most of the time I need to deal with it, so it isn't too hard to get up to it and shove it aside, but they still seriously suck.
