    hitch carriers...

Anyone ever use one of those hitch carriers for a street bike?

My truck's rated for 600lbs tongue weight.
I have air bags chillin in the rear springs to help keep the ass from sagging.
    My race bike's about 350lbs.
And this is rated for 400 (though it says Towing capacity 500lbs in the description).
    http://www.harborfreight.com/400-lb-...ier-99721.html

Wanna pull the trigger so I have a lightweight transport option for when I don't wanna pull Big Red, but I'd like to hear some opinions from those who have actually used rigs like these before.

My dad has one. We've had a 673, CBR and gsxr on it no problem. Hasn't been used in 3 yrs and he's trying to clean out the house, let me see what he wants for it.

    Re: hitch carriers...

Not when I'm going somewhere with the dirty bike, going on a day trip, packing light, picking up/dropping a bike off somewhere or don't feel like burning 10-11mpg's.

Don't ever doubt me, Sav. There's a method to my madness.

At only 100ish bucks it's worth having for the convenience of a light travel option.

Fyi my dad's is the heavy steel carrier, not the lighter aluminum one. Not sure if that affects your decision. Ill get back to you with a $$$ figure in a bit

    how cheap ya wanna go?

I bought this for dirtbike hauling...~$80 shipped

    http://www.t-motorsports.com/500-lb-...dirtbike-ramp/

made of steel, but its chinese quality. shitty ramp, but worked fine to haul a CR125, and another member posted no fatalities hauling a 300lb aprilia...going to use it with my 280lb DR200se

although I don't know about using it with a streetbike

Yup. I use a Boss one on a regular basis on my Tundra. Usually for dirty rides (KX250f or WR400) but I've put a Hawk on it no problem. I'd be bringing the SV to NY on it on the 14th if I wasn't carpooling.

Yeah, that's one of my intended uses. Pick up bike from PK on Monday and NYST on Tues (unless someone wants to carpool)

Pete, talked to my dad. He wants $100 for it so I'm not sure it would be worth it considering the one you're looking at is $115.

The one he has is full steel construction, with the solid channel. I'm not sure its by this manufacturer but it is identical in design/build to this:
    http://www.discountramps.com/hd-motorcycle-carrier.htm

Let me know if you want to check it out.

    Re: hitch carriers...

    Pete I'd get that ^^

that design (as the versahaul) is better for streetbikes than the HF one

    Re: hitch carriers...

Johnny, where's your dad & when is he available?

It's a toss up between the two but if your dad's is in good shape and it's conveniente enough for me to pick it up in the next couple of days then I'll go that route.

Make one thats Super duty. Then you can add a trailor light kit too. Just watch out for exceding the tongue capacity.

You really should, dropping that extra tonnage will be worth at least 2 seconds a lap.
