I'm with this guy, from what I understand the shell has very little to do with the blunt force protection of the helmet, they are for impact protection, and the carbon, kevlar and fiberglass are all supposed to be better than that then plastic. Not only that they are slightly lighter with means less energy to disperse when you hit your head.

The internal foam is the important stuff for brain injuries and I think, at least they advertise, that the expensive helmets actually engineer crush zones and stuff into the newer helmets.

I find it interesting that the EX400 and 700 have different numbers, and that the left front and right front numbers are different as well. One would expect them to be the same.

Find another way to save some money.

    example:

I can jog face first into a wall at 6 Miles per hour and it would hurt

I can also walk 3 miles per hour face first into another wall with a spike on it and even though there is less energy it would do a lot more damage

Disclaimer: I do not walk into walls on any regular occation nor do i suggest that you do.

Based on my knowledge of the human body and mechanisims of injury and what I have read and seen.

Lets look at it a different way. A car has crumble zones that crush, they protect the occupants and slow the vehicle in a crash.

Lets say the vehicle's crush zones bounced back like plastic does. What would that do to the people inside?

As Buddha stated, his helmet looked like there was little damage after his crash... Now part of it may have been that Buddha is just a wimp, sally, girlieman and passed out on his bike due to all the excitement... but I digress...
My point being that the plastic "bounced back". At a minimum it was hard to tell he hit his head with any force.

Or maybe the shell has very little to do with impact absorption, and you should be looking inside the helmet at the condition of the EPS liner.

the shell's not for absorption, it's for disipation.

Obviously the forces & materials involved are different, but the way I look at it is, polycarbonate isn't used in bullet proof vests. Kevlar is because of the way it disipates the force. It spreads the force out over a larger area.

Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong... but i'm not gonna chance it. Like others have said... the worst it can do is cost me money.... I'd rather take a hit to my wallet than my brain.

Agreed. The EPS has the MOST to do with the impact absorption. As Buddha said he saw no damage when he examined the inside of the helmet.

(Hence my "He is a Sally" theory)

Back to the discussion about the SHELL though.... Do you agree with my hypothesis Watson?

i believe helmet doesn't have to be bullet prove for street riding but just have to be good enough, approved standard. when the time comes you probly will get run over by 18 wheelers and that expensive bullet proof helmet couldn't safe you.

    Irrational argument.

That is like saying don't wear the Armor in combat because you'll get blown up by a bomb!

Hey, it retails for $425, I got it for $275... not too awful deal-wise.

It was the first thing I bought when I got into bikes. Didn't know too much about brands at that point... Live and learn...

Xmas and birthday are coming up.... too bad my family is so small... there's so much shit I want haha
