thats a good question. my wife has been riding for years on her permit simply because she has no need for a license. maybe a couple hundred miles a year tops and thats usually on a moped. i should check, maybe it will drop her rate abit.

In both cases, if you prove to be unsafe, you can be punished or have the right to operate revoked. Do you have the same perspective on LRRS licensing that you have on licensing to be allowed on a public roadway?
Does the same principle apply for anyone running a cheater bike or otherwise flaunting LRRS rules? Or are there different standards for what's ethical depending upon whether the 'authority' is a public or private entity?
Dan
There are different standards for whether there is a voluntary agreement or not, and for whether you're talking about access to private property or not. A private venue has the right to make whatever rules they want; this is counterbalanced by the right of the customer to go somewhere else, patronize some other place. Government, OTOH, has the duty to respect people's rights and to be fair and as non-restrictive as possible, since it has been granted the ability to use force, and because people don't have the ability to simply opt out and not patronize the government.

I don't think there's a discount for getting your license, but in MA you get 10% of your comprehensive insurance when you pass the MSF course. The discount is good forever, so eventually the course pays for itself and more.

Good point. Sorry contributing to the off-topic thread drift.

Re: hoping for a late start to winter
huh. i always thought the msf course discount was only good for a few years. now i really have to look into it. might take it myself just for the discount.

Re: hoping for a late start to winter
Go to the m/c insurance company's website that allows you to get a quote online (GEIKO, Progressive). They have a question whether you have a valid m/c license and if you completed the MSF class. You can pick a different selections and see how the final $ quote changes based on your entries.

Interesting, Progressive asks if the course was within 3 years, GEICO says no Mass. RMV just says you get a discount, no time frame. I'll have to check my policy. One thing that ticks me off is no discount for teaching the course, just taking it.

Re: hoping for a late start to winter
Msf discount is forever in mass. You also get a rate reduction after having your mc license for 7 years just like the regular class d.

Can we create a forum where only PhilB can post? And ban him from all other forums.

I'm sure the mods could get that done

I didn't start the fight, or do the hijack. It was a couple of self-righteous jerks who decided to attack the OP for being legal in a different way than they thought he should be. What I did was respond to their BS.

You guys can bitch and moan in this thread, but for me I put on 300 miles over the past couple days. I thought this thread was about riding into the winter as long as you can.

My insurance company gives me a permanent discount for being a MSF Instructor. I think I get 10% off.

Fuck riding, I just like winter threads. That includes fleecy pj pants.

Re: hoping for a late start to winter
God damnit. I'm bike only for two weeks and thanks to this stupid thread, there's a fucking arctic express coming in. Grrr... Oh well, I'll enjoy veteran's day on two wheels before I hunker down.

Re: hoping for a late start to winter
I rode more on my permit while I was 16 before I could legally get my license than I ever have since. Nearly 23k in a year, most of that in the winter.
I also didn't bitch about a $250 course when I was about to spend $11k on a motorcycle to immediately flop on the track :D
Everyone is an asshole, that's all there is to it.

Re: hoping for a late start to winter
Wow this threads still going???
Well I decided to get as many "unlicensed" rides in as I can before next month, this morning was kinda chilly but it was really nice on lunch. last month I bought a pair of bilt insulated leather gloves on sale and they are so damn toasty, problem is on days like today when I forget my other gloves, if its above 45 out my hands sweat instantly. Between the new gloves and thermals I won't be putting my bike away for the season until the first snow again and really it only gets put away because I have to move everything around to get to my plow.
Is there anyone else riding well into freezing temps without any heated gear?
-
Re: hoping for a late start to winter
I rode for a few years through winter w/o heated gear, then I bought a heated vest. One of the best motorcycle purchases I have ever.....
-
Re: hoping for a late start to winter
I use heated gloves. Everything else I can keep warm enough with layering clothing, but the hands were the limiting factor for me. The heated gloves made the difference. I generally ride until the first snow/ice that sticks around. Last year that was Thanksgiving; the year before it wasn't until Christmas Eve.

Re: hoping for a late start to winter
Crazy ass motherfuckers....
I only ride if it's 70...
-
Re: hoping for a late start to winter
I used to ride in the winter. Heated jacket liner (NOT VEST) was the second best $200 I ever spent on my riding career at the time.
I'll let you guess about the best $200.
