The HOT SETUP for a general track toy

I've got my SV. It's done up with suspension n'stuff. It's fun. I like it. No issue in black group. Sometimes I wish I had something with a bit more ooompf as a second track weapon.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a supersport. Either a 600 or liter bike (jicksah sebinfiddy would do too). Something with decent HP is great, but really I'm looking for light with great handling, without dropping all kinds of coin.

Requirements: fuel injected, radial mount brakes, easy to find parts/upgrades/spares, generally reliable, reasonably easy to wrench on. Years looking: 2009-current

That leaves me thinking one of the big Japanese 4. I'm not particular between Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Yamaha. I've owned them all, and find them all to be just fine as brands.

I've heard that R6's from 2006 until 2015 are basically all the same, and is a great platform to work from if you are going with a 600. Truth to this?

What about if you are going for a 1000? What's the pros and cons of the ZX-10R, CBR1000, GSXR1000, and R1 for fun track shenanigans? (not racing)

Cost is also a factor, including in upgrading. Most important upgrades would be suspension.

Quick question, what's the budget? A 790 Duke is an absolute UNIT.

I've chased one around on my SV a few times this season. Too close motor wise, IMO.

Depending on year, budget is from about tree fiddy to $5000.

Something like these could be the starting point on something fun.

Don't mind taking my time on upgrades.

Ken has also discussed moving on from his Gixxa

Kurlon has an R6 track bike for sale that might also fit the bill

03-04 - 2nd gen, EFI with CV slides but still conventional forks
05 - 2nd gen, slightly larger throttle bodies, USD forks /radial mount calipers
06-07 - 3rd gen, traditional EFI with just butterflies
08-16 - Different intake setup, brings back bottom / midrange the 06-07 doesn't have
17- 4th'ish' gen, New R1 styled bodywork, R1 forks, fancier electronics, same basic platform

    Trade ya a 600 F4i for your SV. It’s got suspension &stuff.

    Or I’d sell it outright.

Didn't 08 get taller fork tubes? Otherwise you needed extenders to get appropriate geometry? I went down this path awhile ago and from what I recall 08+ R6 is the way to go.

Nah, I'd just rip the motor out of it for another bike and you ain't cool with that, soooooo

    Lol.

    - - - Updated - - -

And to be absolutely clear, the SV stays, and it continues to be a track toy while also continuing to do Deal's Gap street duty.

This will be an additional bike.

Point, though I don't tend to see that brought up as the primary strike against the 06-07s. I also forgot the 06-09 R6S, aka leftover 04 parts sold as a milder bike next to the R6, filling in the hole left by the departure of the YZF600R.

Re: The HOT SETUP for a general track toy

Might as well give it a liter. Within your budget you can probably get a decently setup 1st gen cross-plane R1 (2009-2014.) If I were on an SV wanting more powah and wanting to spend what you are, that's where I'd be headed. The Wiki.

Oh, big bonus in race bike shopping is the postings. My favorites:

    * Bike has done X:XX's at ABC track but faster in more capable hands
    * Former championship winning bike
    * Was Josh Hayes G bike during the 2005 AMA season
    * 50 pictures with rider getting their knee down, no actual detailed pictures of the motorcycle for sale

I’m well within that budget on my 07 RSV-R I bought this summer. Lots of top shelf parts on it stock. We’ll see how reliable it is, and what breaks on impact - track days are just starting up here again. I just had it serviced, it made 119 hp - so not even close to an I4 liter bike but a significant bump from an SV. Not sure how you feel about Italian bikes but something to maybe consider..

If you want a rolling erection just get a damn leader bike. I liked having the SV and Aunt Fanny. They were a nice pair. Get some rides before you buy if you can. I rode a few and was glad I did before I bought the Gizzler.

Seems like a 2011+ GSXR750 would be the right choice, plenty of power and really light, might have to stretch the budget a bit? Otherwise I'll second the RSV suggestion as they can be bought in your price range easily, and they are a lot of fun on the track.

Re: The HOT SETUP for a general track toy

I'll say that the 675/750/1000 bikes are an easy way to go for track day instructing (I believe you replaced me as a FNG?) I spent most of my day at like 75% and its really nice to be able to relax and still safely ride blue/black group. Its also really nice to be able to dog it out in red, shifting once or twice a lap.

I rode a few R6's on the track and as fun as they are, being in the right gear all the time is pretty darn necessary. All that said, whenever I come back it will be on an R6.

Correct sir. Just an NG now. Got the red jersey at the last event. And that is a major component of this search.

3rd gen, sure. 2nd gen actually has some bottom end, which is why I suspect Clayton is not looking for my 2nd gen...
