    Ice Riding Basics

I just wanted the basics of ice riding, but Google failed me. So, now that I think I have most of the basics down, I thought I'd write up what I know. Here it is: Ice Riding Basics: Winter Moto-Fun | Riding in the Zone

    Re: Ice Riding Basics

Just did a Google search for ice riding basics and Ken's post is #1.
So until someone else can write a better article, Google thinks he's an expert.
And you know the unwashed masses trust Google, so... there it is.

    Nice job Ken

    Re: Ice Riding Basics

I'm a Google certified ice riding expert...after three times riding on ice.

Actually, if you've ridden dirt for any length of time, ice riding will come kinda easy to most people.

I wish I could write as well as you do Ken, I might be able to convince other riders to drill stud pockets and stud up a set of tires for the street or experiment with the darkside, I'm certainly not an expert rider, but I found it rather easy to ride my V-strom in freezing rain & blizzards

I've been so happy to be on two wheels in winter. And to have a new genre of riding to learn. I hope this snowstorm doesn't screw up the ice for too long.

deep snow has a habit of melting on the bottom and or the weight of the snow forcing water thru cracks turning things into a real mess, usually ruining things for the rest of the winter, best way to keep a track usable is to keep up with plowing it out during the storm

Good news would be that the ice they rode last weekend shouldn't be badly affected by this storm.

I'm planning on clearing this storm as soon as it's over to help prevent any ice ruination.

Hmmm may have to see about making the trek out there before said ice melts away....................

Went snowmobiling yesterday so lost out on any ice riding I may have done over the weekend.

This may help me to stay in bounds. Maybe. Also thinking of bringing cones for apexes?

    Re: Ice Riding Basics

The lack of reference points was one of the hardest things for me to get used to on my first ice ride. Luckily the ice has had a bit more character since then.

I hope I can join you fools next time!

    Re: Ice Riding Basics

Eh, my issue was not so much lack of reference points, more finding the right zip code while doing a no-air whip.
Looking forward to seeing you John.

    Re: Ice Riding Basics

My (real) ice tires have arrived. I'm a little concerned that the rear has screws just barely poking through on the inside, through the liner. Maybe the liner used was too thin? Any thoughts on what I can do to prevent the tube from being punctured? Right now I'm thinking dabs of jb-weld. Maybe a couple thick layers of duct tape?

    Re: Ice Riding Basics

These are used via fleabay. Supposedly Fredettes. Kanadian screws. Rear is a Kenda ice and the front is a Dunlop something-something. Supposedly they were used 2-3 times. Screws look barely used.

I think Roland set me straight via fleabay. Some assembly required, batteries not included.
