Icon helmet did good in street spill

Making things short since I don't care to get into to deep of details, but last friday on the way to work, I lowsided on some oil in Brighton on the street (I admit I was at some fault and didn't dodge the spot) and hit the ground really hard. Hard enough to break 6 ribs and a collar bone. At 20-30 mph, I didn't think this was even possible, but the bike's acceleration and it coming down on me, I guess, did enough.

Anyways, I was wearing full gear (sidi vertigo corsas, icon persuit jacket, icon back protector, held full gauntlet gloves, and a icon airframe helmet) and the boots kept my ankles from buckling underneath the bike, and the helmet kept me conscious and didn't even let me get a headache. My head hit before my shoulder/side did, and seeing that my ribs are all kinds of broken and I have a bruise the size of texas on my side, I think it did pretty damned good.

Anyways, ride safe everyone. I've got to chill for the rest of the year and heal. Then figure out if I should track-or-ize my bike or but some ebay fairings on it and sell it. It faired great due to the sliders on it, but the front fairing top broke off when I slid into a car infront of me. Doh. Go figure, eh?

Hooray for gear saving my ass. Broken ribs suck balls, if you haven't had any yet.

that sucks, I hope you have a speedy recovery. Any pics of the damage? particularly to the gear? Interested to see how it all held up.

You guys that have had broken ribs and collapsed lungs are tough bastards. I had a 'bruised' lung, and I was coughing up blood when they dragged me off of the street and into the ER.

I posted pics of the helmet and jacket and bike. The gloves are in perfect shape. I was wearing my icon merc gauntlets, not my Helds. Also, my boots don't even look they they have scratches on them. My big toe had a slight 'poke' on it, and my waist had a giant bruise with slight rashing. You can see the lower part of the jacket buckle and how it's worn. It' kicked up when I slid and exposed a bit of my skin. Not bad rashing at all.

Oxycodone is what they gave me. It's pretty nice. How long do the ribs typically hurt like a bitch? A week?

The helmet took so much hit! Did you have any concussion? I once went down and even without any visible damage to my helmet, had a severe case of concussion with some fluid flowing through my nose

Dude, glad you're okay - good work on the gear and thanks for posting a review.

I broke just 2 ribs in late July (baby highside) - landed on head/shoulder/elbow and my elbow broke the ribs. I was just so glad not to have broken my collarbone, I'm sorry to hear you weren't as lucky. Anyway, for the ribs, it definitely took a turn for the better after a week (I went off the oxycodone after about a week), but I sneezed two weeks after it happened and I swear that put me back to square one. Avoid anyone with a cold at any cost, and have a taser on hand at all times for anyone who makes you laugh (some people, who shall remain nameless, got a lot of amusement out of trying to make me laugh).

It's been almost eight weeks and it is SOOOO much better, although it still hurts getting out of bed in the mornings and when my Dobie lunges after a squirrel - it just takes a while (not my first time with broken ribs, unfortch). Good luck!!

Most people that say this say it because its viewed as "squid" gear, not because it's bad stuff. I wear all icon, and its come through for me in crashes.

Shit, that's what I was afraid of. It's a fucking bitch for me to get out of bed. Since I can't use my right arm (right clavicle snapped) I have to weasel my way out of bed without putting too much pressure on my back, where 'most' of my ribs broke.

It's a pain to get in and out of bed.

So, I just got a notice in the mail that someone is filing a claim against me. Evidently, my bike slid into a girl when I crashed. I guess that's what insurance is for.

I did look her name up on facebook, and yeah, she was as hot as I remembered her to be. Wish I would have been in good enough shape to hit on her or something.

no concussion at all. It hit the pavement hard. I was able to get right up, take off all my shit in a panic because I couldn't breathe, and talk to the paramedics/cops/angry girl, etc. The helmet did a great job. Next season I'll be picking up another airframe to replace it along with a set of egay fairings. If I decide to ride again (which probably will happen after I heal).

I was impressed with the lid. I literally bounced my head off the ground. The back is messed up when I landed it again on the ground. And I was able to remember the whole ordeal... I didn't really pass out or anything.

I am thinking about cutting the helmet in half at work to see what the foam lining looks like inside. I'll post pics if I decide to do that... I might not want to part with such a souvenir.

HJC is the contract factory for ICON.

Icon is the Parts Unlimited house brand. PU doesn't own a factory. They contract all this work out. I have heard from multiple people who know HJC from the inside that Icon is made in the HJC factory.

It may not be HJC Korea, but it is a HJC owned factory. With HJC tech.

    Get well!

Naw, no worries. The police were there and helped the girl file it all. She's looking for an insurance claim, and I'm going to let the insurance company figure this one out as I wasn't exactly there to discuss the details after the crash as I was getting shoved into an ambulance. It's not like my bike didn't slide into her car. So it's out of my hands.

Here's a question for you horndogs: is she doable?
