    Good idea / Bad Idea

If I was to say scrap the idea of riding on the street for a while, but I loved to ride, would it the idea of selling the SV for a motard / dirt bike be reasonable?

I am guessing I could get around $3500-4000 for my bike, it is an 03 SV with ~17k on it, full suspension rework, steel lines, good shape, etc.

Could I expect to get on a dirt bike for that kind of money that would come with full dirt and motard trim?

[EDIT: I'd want to hit 4+ track days per year plus a lot of dirt riding if I had a dirt bike/motard]

Plan B would be to keep SV and do track days.

If I really could afford 2 bikes I would probably keep SV as a track bike and buy a scooter to ride on the street, i.e. Aprilia Atlantic 500.

My idea with the dirt bike is that I could learn a lot of stuff that I will never get to do on the street bike. I can go good around the track, but I can't wheelie, jump, don't know what its like to back it in around corners, etc. It seems like if I did the dirt thing for a while then came back to something like the SV I could really ride the wheels off of a street bike.

I can't picture selling my SV though ,I like it too much and I think that it's a good bike for my skill level.

What about an EX500 track bike?

Sorry this isn't the most cohesive post but it's time to leave work

My suggestion would be to keep the SV as is, and add a dirt bike.

Do more track days... and dirt riding.

    That's what works for me.

I had the same dream when I bought my DRZ400SM. Actually, I've been very pleased with the results.

The DRZ was really fun at the track. It is far from the quickest thing on the track, but I had a great time anyway, and with some mods you can get them to go more quickly. In under an hour, I can have it all set up in dirt trim, and go ride the trails. It does both well, at least well enough for me.

I'm not sure what you'll find for $4000, though.

Pick up a late model 450cc four-stroke dirtbike and pick up a set of extra wheels for it.

If there were a nice SMX track nearby, I think that'd be the shit for rapid learning with minimal risk, w/o hefty investment. You'd think that with all the motard bikes around here, some enterprising individual would get something exclusively SMX going. You could also give ice racing a try during the colder months.

I'd love to just add another dirt bike to the stable, but it's not in the financial cards for me right now.

DRZ400SM would be an interesting option, plus there's always the opportunity to punch it out a bit for some more sack.

I will probably just do the easiest thing which is keep doing what I am doing!
