    Impact Jackets

Has anyone ever heard of impact jackets? They have airbags in them that are supposed to inflate on impact. My very protective father sent me the following links today, and offered to buy me one of the jackets, but I am not sure whether they are actually safer (or maybe even less safe) than regular jackets with kevlar armor. Thoughts?

I have heard of them but I didn't know they had ben out 2 years.

Looks intresting a long as once they deflate the jacket is still good quality for skidding down the road.

I would hate to forget that ripcord being attached to the bike and get off the bike.

It looks like a Ski Parka...

I wonder how those work, how can they tell when to deploy. Obviously if they require a big enough jolt, it would be too late to protect you when you hit the ground. If theres a leash attached to your bike and you leave it inflates it, like the cord you pull for an inflatable life raft I wonder how ridonkulous youd look when you hop off your bike too fast at a gas station. Seems like a good idea, Id just want a bit more information before I bought one.

Thats news story has been flying around the motorcycle forums this morning.

They "connect" to the bike via a tether... just like the kill switch tether on a jet ski / PWC.

Like Doc mentioned... I'd be really worried that I'd forget to untether and "poof" my jacket would inflate.

I know I always forgot to unclip my Sea Doo tether.

it reminds me of those self inflating "float coats" we had to wear on the aircraft carrier flight decks. every so often someones would go off accidently and they'd randomly and instantly inflate like the michelin man. fairly funny to watch the guy working next to you suddenly expand, but they had to be deflated before they could move their arms again.

I wonder if that would be more apt to cause a problem in a crash. You normally want to get small, keep your limbs from being out there to contact stuff and snap (snap-off) by the leverage. Anytime I crash i keep everything tucked in, I wouldn't be comfortable with this restricting my ability to do that.

I say false sense of security - false like his "50yds thru the air"...ya, ok. Wear a well armored jacket with a separate back protector.
