"Need" is a somewhat fluid concept sometimes at this end of the internets.

I don't remember seeing many mounts with a ball like that. Is that where the problem is? Any thoughts on why they'd do that?

That ball fits the back of the nuvi cradle. It pops in/out of the assembly.
It is not a ram ball mount.

Are you saying it is more probable than not that RAM deflated that ball? Are you going to release a 250 page report with no conclusive evidence to support this?

I think the ambient air temperature was higher in the factory where they made it. When they sent it to the cold NE winter, it shrank

True. It would have held the GPS anyway.
But I am not a gps holder expert.

True however, like many a-holes always says there will be an asterisks next to its name.

With a battery case (or any other non-rubbery case for that matter or a bare phone) it is NOT recommended.

Thought it was a one-time thing when my iPhone 6S went smashing down the road after going over some railroad tracks last year. Nope, thing jettisoned from the X-Grip again on Saturday while buzzing down I-190 but luckily I caught it in my lap.

I'm now looking for a more secure mount. I don't want to replace my screen again.

This has also happened to me even with an otterbox, not because of slip, but because the rubber feet came loose.

Superglue that shit on the second you get it. Haha.

$150! Man. Looks sturdy, but for that money I'll just keep it in my pocket.

Quadlock looks a bit more reasonable price wise, but I'd have to bail on my battery case. Once you are used to never worrying about a dead battery, it gets hard to get away from it....

They come with a tether thing now (or at least one is available, not sure if it's included). Looks pretty trick.

    Re: Inexpensive iPhone mount?

    That's awesome.

I've had two mounts I've used on my bicycles that use that kind of "tether". It's effective.
Unfortunately both of those mounts have been crap with respect to the bits connecting that tether to the bars. Ram mount wins there.

    Re: Inexpensive iPhone mount?

I bought a couple mounts for my bicycle, I think they were GUBB. Machined aluminum clamping style. $13 shipped from main land ChINA corp. They work, not sure they would be good on a MC. Only place i've found them is on ebay.

I've never had an issue with my x-grip mounted to the center of my bars, but for $5 it looks like that's worth picking up. I didn't even know they made that.
