Unhappy Friend and co-worker of mine killed Sat.

Just last week he wanted me to look up some prices for some old Goldwing parts on ebay for him so he could finish restoring his. I told him (jokingly) not to waste his time and just buy a new bike.

He told me he couldn't buy one until he was done paying for his daughters wedding this July. I guess he really wanted to ride.

"Haverhill Police Lt. William Leeman said he's aware of the reputation that Rosemont Street has. "It's always been a fairly fast road," he said"

There is no "fast roads" (or streets), there is only fast drivers who have no consideration at all for other human beings living in the neighborhood. And how more easier can it get than being able to get out on bail of $5000?? This guy should have been trown in jail straight, no passing "GO". Running a stop sign while passing another car at 80mph+....

Very sorry about the loss of a loved one. How sad...

I dont' even hesitate to call the cops on people I think are drunk on the roads now. I did it twice last year and will continue to do so if I think something like this could be prevented. I'm not saying anyone could have prevented this except for the shit behind that wheel, but we can all do our part. Next time someone you know is stepping behind the wheel after more than a few drinks, tackle them.

Ride on new motorcycle ends in tragedy
By Caroline Louise Cole, Globe Correspondent | March 21, 2006

HAVERHILL -- At his wife's urging, Lawrence J. Monahan bought the motorcycle of his dreams Saturday morning.

Around 5 that evening, only hours after driving the 2004 Road Glide Harley-Davidson home from the New Hampshire dealership,
Monahan, 53, was taking the motorcycle out for a quick errand when he was struck leaving his driveway by an alleged drunk
driver traveling in excess of 80 miles per hour, according to police and his stepson. Police Lieutenant William Leeman said
Alexis Ortiz, 22, of Haverhill, hit Monahan's motorcycle, throwing him and his Harley about 10 feet across Rosemont Street
and into the bushes in front of his neighbor's house. Monahan was pronounced dead an hour later at Lawrence General Hospital,
Leeman said. Haverhill District Court Judge Patricia Dowling yesterday entered a plea of not guilty for Ortiz at his
arraignment and held him without bill pending a dangerousness hearing Thursday. Ortiz is charged with motor vehicle homicide
while operating under the influence of alcohol and operating negligently. Police said witnesses reported that Ortiz lost
control as he swerved around another car that had stopped to allow Monahan to enter the street. Monahan's wife, Jacqueline,
was among the first to try to revive him after she heard the screech of brakes and ran outside to see what happened,
according to her son, Gary Cristiano.

''My stepdad was taking his bike on a quick errand to Wal-Mart to get his glasses fixed before dinner," Cristiano said.
''I was upstairs at the time and heard the bike start and then brakes squeal. When [ the driver] hit him, it's like he
killed my mother, too. They were best friends." Cristiano said his mother learned to understand her husband's passion for
biking when they rented a bike for a weekend ride last summer. ''My stepdad had an old junk bike in the garage which he
kept saying he was going to repair, but when that didn't happen, my mom told him to buy a newer one," Cristiano said.
Jacqueline Monahan said she and her husband of eight years had moved to Rosemont Street 10 months ago. A mechanic, he had
recently landed a job at a Subaru dealer in Manchester, N.H., she said.

Monahan said she is urging friends and neighbors to join her letter-writing campaign asking the city to step up enforcement
of the street's 30 miles-per-hour speed limit. ''My husband would expect that I will do whatever I can to change things, so
this never happens again to anyone else," Monahan said.

Unbelievabley sad. Right in front of his own house and family. I cant imagine the horror they all must have felt at the sound and sight of that crash. Or should I say murder? Drunks are a scourge. Poor guy must have been stoked to be on his new HD, only to be snuffed by this fucking moron. My thoughts and condolences go out to all who knew and loved him. The good do indeed die young. R.I.P.

Hopefully the family can carry on. What an absolute tragedy

This last part of the story is a tell tale sign the idiot was a poor driver... not to mention coupled with drinking he was a rolling bullet.

Similar thing happened to me just a couple of days ago.

I move over to the right side of the road to allow oncoming traffic to get between two trucks that had basically made it a one lane road.

The idiot behind me swerves around me and almost goes head on with the car coming.

Remember... if the car or rider in front of you does something odd, make sure you can see around them fully before just blowing past them.

Check, double-check, and triple-check when you are in high risk situations (which is any time traffic is unpredictable).

we need TRAFFIC CALMING MEASURES. Yes, this means "speed bumps" or speed tables on residential roads and on those roads where people like to be able to cross the street without being mowed down. I am not familiar with this road, but it really does not matter. Anywhere the speed limit is 30mph and it is densely populated, traffic calming is possible and it doesn't necessarily have to be speed bumps. anyone can speed on any road at any time, but a road that is known for continuous high speed traffic should be first on a list for these speed tables.

Yuck what a stupid and unnecessary death.

Best wishes... I hope the driver gets nailed but you know he won't get what he deserves.
