Newbie Question RE: SV650

Ok so the other day word and I did some window shopping for a bike for me and I sat on a bunch of bikes but felt really comfy on the Ninja 650 and SV650.

Regarding the SV650, I've been looking on craigslist and other places and noticed a lot of "naked" SV650s. Did these bikes actually ever retail like this or is it just a popular mod to take the fairings off to make it look less sporty?

Also if anyone is selling either of these (or know anyone selling one) for a reasonable price please let me know!

And no I will not buy a busa and wheelie it.

Yes they came in a standard (naked) and faired trim.

SV's are great. I even used mine as sport-tourer last summer to do the Adirondacks; did just fine.

never ridden an sv before but i know the ninjas ride like a big scooter. granted you have enough power to pass people on the highway fairly easily without downshifting, but otherwise the ninjas aren't all that great... again I'm coming from only one side here without having ever ridden the sv

i rode a Ninja 650R for a day; i didn't care for the way it shifted at all - very clunky compared to the bikes i was used to. power was fine, but definitely not like a 600 sportbike.

I think you guys have some very lofty standards. Remember, these 650cc twins are incredible values. Perfect for newer riders, especially on the used market.

SV650's are great all-around bikes. You can take them to the track (ask Oreo) or your can tour with them, or you can commute with them, or you can carve some twisties. They have good, usable torque, and an exhaust note that separates you from most of the other sportbikes. They also have a great aftermarket and a strong community.

I've purchased an SV for myself, and two other SV's for friends of mine in the last 6 months. There are still deals out there, just need to JUMP when you see one. Our latest score two nights ago is a naked '00 model with full M4 exhaust, new tires and a whole bunch of other niceness for $1750, ready to ride but needing some attention with a good wash and some maintenance. Last one was a '02 S model, with some nice mods but in near cherry condition for $2100.

I prefer the naked, some people prefer the S model. Seems as the S is easier to find since more people want the naked in the used market.

I know the gen 2's are: naked => bars, S => clipons.
Is that true for gen 1's too? Would explain some of the market preference in my mind.

That's one thing I find interesting about the Kawi 650's. The ER-6n has bars, but so does the Ninja 650r. I find both much more comfortable than the late model SV-S.

Yes, both gen1 and 2 had clips/bars on S/N respectively...unless a previous owner changed something.

S model Sv's (sv650s) has a upper fairing with dual headlights and windshield. The naked has a ujm style round headlight, no windshield. And of course the aforementioned clipons on the s. Google some pictures of them. None of them came with lower fairings. Those you see with lower fairings are put on afterwards.

Another thing about the sv that is great for newer riders is the throttle response. It wont scare the everliving shit out of you like my MV Agusta that revs to 9k just by looking at the throttle.

Actually, in '08 suzuki offered the SV650F with complete fairing.
