John McGuinness & science of fast

There's a big data / data viz contest that my company is hosting. The challenge? Use big data analytics and visualization to explain why John McGuinness is an extra-ordinary rider. First prize is $5000 (for each: data algorithm and visualization). Not sure if this is anybody's domain, but figured I'd share.

I may give it a try myself (it's my field) but I'm not eligible because I work for the company. Boooo.

Looking at the data provided, I did not see ball size. On a more sincere note, you may be trying to quantify something which is not a number. Keep us posted on the results!

Good to see my training program is paying dividends, as I resemble that remark.

McGuinness is an anomaly. It may that he has bigger balls (already been covered) and a higher fear threshold than other riders do.

It's not the size of the balls, I think it's the density. Those things are two singularities, they would drown Phelps if he tried to wear them swimming. You're going to need some data from the source.

This is the kind of number crunching I love to do just for fun. If I have enough time I'll definitely take a crack at it. The big balls theory is already plausable. If you look at the average heart rate of John vs Chad you see a 30bpm difference in heart rate(could be indicator of fear/excitement).

    Results are in!

Stefan's (1st place, data) analysis was unique and I think David Foster's (2nd place, viz) story is the easiest to understand - has good combination of metrics and commentary. In the end it seems to boil down to line and consistent (segment to segment) performance.

What I found interesting is that a number of the visuals created are similar to what a lot of us get using the GPS lap timer software.

I guess this project was so interesting that the company is following up by going to Isle of Man. Wish I could get in on that one.
