Re: anyone been to the Kancamagus recently?
The other nice thing about riding in NY is the liberal speed limit on back roads.

takes me 4 hours to get there as well, makes a nice day trip, get a couple of VT notches along the way, you can easily get 3-4 hours in Essex County and return in a 12 hour ride
Re: anyone been to the Kancamagus recently?
Ya that is a good idea.. gotta make it a trip.!!! Looks awesome!!!.. I don't think I could do it in a day even if I trailer my bike there
Re: anyone been to the Kancamagus recently?
Daks is definitely worth getting a room or camping. It's a beautiful area with awesome roads. My dad is moving up there from south west-ish NY, I'm pretty excited. Now it'll actually be fun to visit him.
Re: anyone been to the Kancamagus recently?
Lake placid is a nice place to stay, I used to train at the Olympic village. The ski jump is pretty awesome as well.
Re: anyone been to the Kancamagus recently?
The Daks are amazing to ride. Do it!

if Gatlinburg/Stowe/North Conway is your thing
for being close to the good riding and away from tourist trap, Keene Valley, Elizabethtown, Crown Point are better places
I avoid North Elba with a passion
Re: anyone been to the Kancamagus recently?
I made a run out to my old stomping grounds and it's nothing like north Conway. You only like dirt roads anyway so ymmv, besides it's free to watch the figure skaters and play in the snow in the middle of summer so that's worth it. BTW I used to live in Lake placid so nice on telling me what it's like.

no, its actually worse, more like Stowe or Gatlinburg, I never lived right in North Elba, but close enuf when I went to Paul Smith's that I know what I am talking about, admittedly, it was a while ago, but traffic and tourism have not got better
Re: anyone been to the Kancamagus recently?
I lived in the Olympic village and now live off lake Winnipesaukee so I'll respectfully disagree. Like I said it's a nice place to stay IMHO that's all.
Re: anyone been to the Kancamagus recently?
the bumps on the Kanc (or any road in NE for that matter) dont bother me as much anymore now that i have a bike with a lot more suspension. its fun to rip twisty, bumpy back roads at a speed that would make a full size pick up trucks rear end dance through the corners
