I had an 04 katana and rode the shit out of that bike my first year riding. Good starter bike but you need to be atleast 5.10 and 180 pounds or more ...if you are smaller go with the kawi

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll be taking time to sit on both of them to see how they fit me. I guess that and the conditions will be the deciding factors.

I'm 5'11 and 250 pounds, but it's more muscle than fat so I'm not a HUGE guy. Suzuki sounds like it might be a better fit... but I won't really know until I sit on them. I really don't like fat bikes, and the katana just looks huge

My husband is about the same size (and from the sounds, build) as you and started on a ninja 250. he found it to be very comfortable. you may prefer the 500. definitely sit on both.

Why not a bandit 600? Basically an upright Katana, and more stylish IMHO.

    Re: Katana vs. Ninja

The Katana is not huge or fat. I would just sit on them both, make sure you are comfortable with one or both feet on the ground. Then have some one straddle the front tire and hold the handlebars so you can get your feet on the pegs and in some what of a proper riding position to see how that feels.
