    ZX-12R,

Hey man, have you ever looked at the torque curve of a 12R (I havent' so I am asking). I was looking at mine one day and realized that my Busa makes more torque (we won't even get into horsepower) than the V-twin litre bikes at an earlier RPM. I'm making over 80 ft.lbs/ at 3000RPMs, that's more than they peak at. The reason I am bringing this up is that, just like mots other people, use to think that the V-twin was the king at low end torque.

In my previous post I was trying to keep things simple but there are a number of other factors that determine the amount of torque an engine can produce.

Displacement is one of the biggest contributors to torque production. If you increase your CC's, you will increase your torque. That is the primary reason why your Busa has higher numbers than other sportbikes.

How the engine is timed and tuned as well as bore and stroke greatly influences torque production (and HP). There are a number of 1200cc range cruisers out there that can produce upwards of 90ft/lbs of torque under 1,500 RPMs! The problem is they are unable to keep producing that torque over the 4K rpm mark. On the other end of V-twin tuning are the sportbikes like Ducati and Honda's RC-51. They are set up to sacrafice their low end torque in exchange for high end power.

This comparison is similar to the busa and 12's power production (although nowhere near as extreme). If you look at the torque and HP curves for the 2 bikes you can see the different approaches in engine building:

The busa's torque peaks around 7k and starts to fall off where the 12Rs keeps increasing until 9.5K. The bump in the 12Rs torque curve has to do with the FI mapping in the earlier (2000 model year) versions of the bike. Kawasaki chose to push the HP envelope where Suzuki went for upper midrange torque. One thing the chart clearly illustrates is that the Blackhawk can't hold a candle to either of us!!!

One thing I could not find anywhere on the net was a dyno chart that shows the 12 or busa doing a run from idle to redline. I know that if I flog the throttle when I'm at 1,500 RPMs the bike hesitates due to its high compression. I can only give it full throttle without it hesitating around 3,000 RPMs. I'm curious how the busa behaves at 1,500. I'm sure its not making anywhere near the torque a V-twin cruiser can!

The only dyno chart I could find to look at (quick search) was on a Yamaha Road Star Warrior, a 1670cc V-twin. The bike that this dyno chart is from had some mods too, but again I don't know what they were.

    dyno chart

It is close to my dyno chart but still falls a little short.

The busa has a small "cough" when you nail it at low rpms in 1st gear, that and it wants to flip over when you do that. If you install a TRE it smooths things out down low.

You ever think about going used? Reason I'm asking is you can get a much better deal on something that already has things done to it (instead of you spending the money on the parts).

    Sorry, had to do it!

    edit:

This was not posted by Joel....apparently I left myself signed on on Brian's computer. Not that I don't think that it is humorous but I wanted Bri to get full credit for this one

    busa vs zx12r video

    about 50MB

    http://ninjazx12r.free.fr/videos/zx12r-hayabusa.wmv

best video comparo I have seen on the busa vs zx12r debate...

And just one thing to say about the busa 'looks' - at first I hated it. Thought it was butt ugly. I have since been converted into thinking it is definitely different and is my bike of choice if I ever decide to change (notice the word change and not necessarily upgrade!) lol

I think the busa is the best fit to my 6'2 235lb frame. Somehow most of that is in the mid section

FWIW my friend has lots of bikes. including a ZX11, ZX12R, dookaki's among a few others...he prefers the 11 over the 12. but then he's old.
