$12 dollars a gallon I thought the price would be comperable to gas or diesel. Luckily it doesn't take much to do the chain.

That's the ultra, golden, super, trendy kerosene. Didn't you know that Jim doesn't pay for peasant stuff?

bought a gallon of it in 2 years ago. $12 may be pricey, but it's still much cheaper than cans of chain clean

It seems that most the places that sell heating oil around here sell it. They're just never open when I'm available to go pick it up.

I don't know anything about the difference in composition of Kerosene vs Diesel but isn't Kerosene recommended because it doesn't eat away at the O-rings? I used jet fuel regularly for a while because I could get it for free, but I stopped when I snapped a sideplate one day. It was probably a unrelated event but it got me thinking about twice about deviating from the service manuals recommendations.

just go to your local fuel station with a container and pump out a gallon of diesel.

Gasoline will eat away at your rubber o-rings (more so because of the ethanol added to it than from the gasoline itself). Diesel doesn't have the additives, its straight petroleum product, won't harm anything.

it's all the same stuff with a different flash point although, kerosene will work better if your cleaning your chain at temperatures bellow 15ºf

I like how you guys are looking to get the cheapest deal. How long will it take you to use a gallon of kerosene.

I use it to clean my chain, and a $12 gallon bottle has about 1/2 of it used after 2+ years.

It isn't a lot of difference $ wise. But really, why pay $8000 for a CBR when you can get the same one for $6000?

The service manual says to use kerosene, not diesel gas. I'm aware they both will clean my chain. But Ace Hardware was the only shop I could find in my area that sold kerosene, and they happened to be a 1/2 mile down the road.

Do yourself a favor and get a spray bottle too. Load that puppy up with kerosene and it will make chain cleaning a lot easier.

FYI - Some heating oil companies in Boston carry it. Do you guys heat your home with oil?

More and more gas stations in my area are going to non-ethanol gasoline.
    Big signs advertising it.

Lots of stories about small engines and boat motors having issues with ethanol destroying carburators and injectors.

Back on topic, diesel will work just as well as kerosene but it stinks more.

At wallyworld, in the camping section, look for 1-K fuel. It is kerosene.
Tiki lamp oil is also scented kerosene.

If you are near North Reading, I get mine at Temple oil, same price as diesel. They have a pump.

I use it to start brush fires in the backyard every spring.

    Re: kerosine

Are you people seriously paying $12/gal for Kerosene?

    1. Bring a container to your local gas station
    2. Fill container with Kerosene
    3. Pay $3.50 gallon
    4. ...
    5. Profit!

Seriously though, $12/gallon made me laugh. In Vermont, many local gas stations have a kerosene pump.

The current price is around $3.50.
