    Tire mileage question

So I was at a local bike dealer last weekend so my chick could sit on a few smaller bikes to get an idea of what she liked. A nice salesman started to help us and we got to talking. The conversation led to tire wear. He looked at me shocked when I told him I was only getting about 5K out of my pilot power 2ct's. I was curious and asked him what he rode and what he was getting. He pointed to the back area to a ZX6R and said he had gotten about 15K a few times on PP.

SO what's the deal? I thought most people were getting around 5K on PP and that the 3 sets I have burned all got about the same. So what have other gotten on their Pilot powers?

    Re: Tire mileage question

Bike Salesman bullshitting I am shocked.

    1K bikes of mine 3 to 4 k rear 5k front

Even though he probably was the world's biggest pussy thats wrong.

Touring tires on smaller dispacement bikes do get over 12 k

RandyO should be the mileage expert on tires of his SV650

Yeah I thought so. I was just making sure I wasn't loosing my mind. Or that I wasn't doing something incredibly wrong to get that millage.

    Carry on.

    Re: Tire mileage question

I never ran a michelin but you would need a pilot road to get over 10k on the SV, its a light bike, but a twin that develops torque at lower rpm than the more powerful inlines and has abrupt engine braking

best milage I ever got on my SV was 13k or so with an Azaro II but usually about 10k

its likely that an inline 4 that doen't really get its torque till higher rpm & less engine braking could get more miles if yer a wuss and never crank on it with a sport touring tire, you'd have to be a real wuss and super high pressure to do it with a sport tire, then, what's the point, bragin you got 15k out of a sport tire when for less money and better performance you can get the proper tire for your riding

    Re: Tire mileage question

nearly 100,000 miles on a combination of ST2 and Multistrada. (Many more on other I4s)

I have tried almost every SPort Tour Tire....5500 miles average for all. EXCEPT, my last set which were Dunlop Road Smars which gave me 6500 miles with probably a few hundred miles still available....

I've got 10k+ on a PP front and SuperMaxx Rear. The rear still has a few k's but the front is on its final 1,000. Flogged (hard) almost daily as a commuter/toy. They are pumped up kind of high 38/40 and I don't weight a lot.

front tires don't count, they can easily outlast rears 2:1

Interesting. I guess that makes sense since the front is really more along for the ride aside from the initial steering input and braking. Is that correct?

Lower power bikes and twins can eat rear tires if you downshift a lot

    Re: Tire mileage question

I can't imagine getting over 10k out of a rear tire. I was happy when I got 8200 out of the stock TrailWings that came on my V-Strom. Replaced those with a set of BattleWings, got about 6500 miles out of that rear before I pulled it because I had a long trip coming up (it still had enough tread left that it could have probably managed the 2000-mile trip; just didn't want to take any chances -- that said, the BattleWing front is still going strong at almost 9500 miles). And these are tires with deep tread designed to last a long time.

I use Avon AM26 RoadRiders on my Bonneville, and the rear's coming up on needing replacement. I think I've got around 6000 miles on it.

Granted, I'm a big guy (a little over 250lbs) and I tend to accelerate pretty hard and compression brake a lot, so I'm hard on rear tires. But still...

    Re: Tire mileage question

I think rear tire wear is proportional to how hard you accelerate. I go thru about 2 rears to every 1 front. 5K miles is about correct for me as well...

Pfffft! Gino is a pussy. Instead of finishing a race he wimps out and takes his shock apart on the track.

But yes the guy at the dealership didn't seem to be BSing me. He truly looked shocked when I told him I only get about 5K

had a pirelli 2c that I got 8900 miles and some track days thrown in to keep them wearing evenly do track day miles count double cuz you are riding that much harder and that was on my old cbr 1k.
