WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. -- A motorcyclist visiting New Hampshire died in a freak accident on Tuesday when a tree collapsed into the roadway.
Police said Louise Croft, 43, of Geulph, Ontario, Canada, was a passenger on a motorcycle driving on Route 112 in Waterville Valley. That stretch of road is also known as the Kangamangus Highway.
Conway Deputy Fire Chief Keith Noble described what a witness saw. "All she said was the tree just fell from the sky and struck this individual in the head," Noble said.
Police said the birch tree was rotting and randomly fell into the road.
People nearby responded quickly, including Croft's husband, and began trying to treat her.
"They were actually on scene giving rescue breaths and CPR," Noble said.
Croft was transported to Memorial Hospital in North Conway where she was later pronounced dead.
The Kangamangus is one of the not-to-miss routes for riders during motorcycle week.
Emergency workers say getting into an accident on the stretch has added risks. The nearest emergency crews can be miles away.
"From our station house to the height of land which we cover, then it goes to Lincoln, is 21 and a half miles up," Noble said.
Police did not identify the driver of the motorcycle that Croft was riding on, but said the person was not injured.
Croft is the seventh motorcyclist to die in New Hampshire since Friday. Three people were killed in an accident with six motorcycles and an SUV on Friday in Stoddard. An accident in Thornton involving a car and two motorcycles on Sunday also killed three people.

yea that is completely unlucky, I wonder how much a helmet would help with the impact of a tree fallen from the sky though also.... it would definetly increase you chances of living so dont get me wrong

My mother took a tree in the face on a snowmobile many years ago. Had she not had on her Bell full face helmet, she probably would not be here today. Completely smashed the face shield, broke the chin bar area and left it mostly destroyed. She got away with a black eye and a headache.
Not a fun way to go, that's for sure.

I'm sure it would have given her a much better chance than her bare head did.Originally posted by neuthunder

a friend just called and told me his buddy ( on a cruiser) took out a moose @ 430 pm yesterday on rt 112 W.
destroyed the cruiser, passenger went for a road surf @ 50 feet, and driver is suffering minor injuries plus a broken arm
dayum....
Bras cause cancer.
Even with a helmet, if it hit her square int he head, I'd think her neck could break. Either way, very sad...nothing could have ben done.

If you run into a wall with a helmet on, you still ran into a wall.
Mzdagrl, I was thinking the same thing; that even with a helmet, her neck would have likely been broken. However, she may have still been alive...
What a shame...
On my mountain bike though. Out in the woods of central NH, during some heavy wind. A 5" dia tree literally fell across the trail behind me where I just was seconds earlier.
I made short time of getting out of that approaching storm situation and pedalling my butt home.
So sad for this lady, what are the odds?![]()
see ya,

Rest in Peace... Proof that trees do jump in the road...
