    KTM LC questions

so ive been half ass looking for a street tard. i LOVE my SV1K but i dont ride it much and certainly not really any long distances. i am kinda hoping that the fun of a tard will have me riding it more. i dont want something anemic like a DRZ nor do i wish to dump a bunch of $$$ into converting a WR/CRX type. so it looks like im leaning towards an orange bike. KTM 620/640/Duke 2 and i just stumbled upon a 950 supermoto. so my questions are is the LC4 as reliable as i hear it is and how easy are valve adjustments (are they screw and locknut)? and is the LC8 any better/worse? i know the LC8 is a twin and im not sure that i want to go that route but the 950 seems like its the average between a single cylinder "motard" and my SV1K.
ive got my eye on a Duke 2 but the seller is asking too much and wont move on the price enough to make my consider it (over retail).
i spotted this 950 today and it just kinda sparked my interest.

    Re: KTM LC questions

From what I've heard of the 950s, I'd say it's pretty close to your SV1k. Those are potent engines. One thing to look out for with the LC8s, though, is that they're notorious for chewing through water pumps. Apparently it's a good idea to preemptively replace them every 15k miles or so.

As for the LC4s... it depends on what model you get. The smaller dirtbike motors are pretty maintenance intensive, from what I've heard; the 620s/640s aren't too bad but still more than a typical street engine, plus they have a reputation for being paintshakers. From everything I've heard, the thing to do is to go with one of the newer 690s -- apparently that engine is much more refined, smoother-running, and has more reasonable maintenance requirements.

A 690 Enduro is high on my list to replace my XR650L.

    Re: KTM LC questions

i would love a 690 duke but the price tag on it horrendous, so is the 690SM. not mention, while i think it looks awesome, its a little further from street tard then what it used to be.

im looking in the used market so the 620/640 is probably more in my range

    Re: KTM LC questions

I love my 950sm, the fact is I sold my wr250x and my drz400sm is up for sale. Both were purchased only a few months prior to me finding my 950 in North Carolina and having it shipped. The 950 has good power (I say good because I also own a zx14) handles fantastic, is very comfy and can wheelie like there is no tomorrow with just a snap of the throttle.

    Re: KTM LC questions

Water and fuel pump gremlins with the lc8's.
The lc4 is pretty bombproof. Yes to screw and locknut valve adjustments. The oil change is actually more of a pita than the valve adjust. I ran around on a 400 for a bit. Even with dot knobs, and a rigid mounted single, I never felt like it was unbearable. A 6xx duke or adv with street ish tires would be ideal up there in the woods of nh. Especially since every backroad sucks so bad.

I was seriously considering buying a 950 Super Enduro until the Triumph Tiger 800 was confirmed to be coming. I'd still have a hard time turning one down if a really good deal came up. Awesome bikes.

I can tell you the 620/640's have a lot of vibration and that the LC8's are beasts! The 950/990's are ridiculously fun motors. Make me laugh every time I ride one.

Either way, IMO you're definitely looking the right place for a street toy

    Re: KTM LC questions

the 450 is an SX. not an LC4 or for street use.
the 525 isnt an LC4 either and the other is a dual sport with a 21" front. really looking for 17s

i dont know anything about the huskys. do they make good street toys? hows the maint? the LC4s are screw and locknut which makes valve adjustments super easy. i can check them every oil change.

By mannered like: I mean the same as. Think of it as husky's lc4, and the 510 is husky's rfs. (which is the sx, mxc, exc)

cool. thanks, screw and locknut are super easy. that video of the 250 looked easy as well, would just have to have a supply of shims. how reliable are we talking with the 610/630s? same as the LC?

Yes. They supposedly have a "gremlin". But I honestly can't remember off the top of my head. My good buddy has an 06 with 12k flawless miles.

i had a duke for 6 or so years maintenance was a piece of cake.

other than the vibe's i loved the bike for around town stuff it had a top speed just over 100. i bought mine new and never rode it without a flat slide.

iv'e had a super duke for a few years and love it for our shitty roads but want to sell it.
i have no interest in ripping it up on a sport bike any more.

iv'e had the 950 se for a few years and bout i will ever sell it, it's my favorite bike ever.

i almost put flat slides on the se but thought i might be better off with the softer throttle response of the cv's after all who's going to use all the power available from a liter dirt bike other than me and very few others.

    Re: KTM LC questions

I just purchased a 2001 KTM 640 enduro this past week. It was pretty short money, $1800 with new Happy Trail panniers.

I haven't even ridden it up and down the street yet, but pretty excited about a new lightweight in the family.
