I just sifted through the specs on the 1090 ADV. Hadn't realized it was available in the US now. Specs read great. Looks like the 1190 ADV & R are no longer sold; your choice is the 1090 ADV or 1290 SA-R. 1090 looks very 990 esque.
Neat.
Yeah, now my eyes are split between the AT and the new 1090 R. Can't really afford either one right now, so I will just keep window shopping for a bit.
If they actually release a 800 adv rig, I'll be oogling that too.
Bubba's post hits it on the head
But while I see the strengths of the DL650, I don't recommend it much off road. For what you're looking to do I vote for a 650 single.
But fwiw I have seen some good riders do quite well with the 950 in gnarly Rocky sections.
They're all big heavy bikes. Make of them what you will.

I have now seen the 790 adventure (standard, not the r) in the flesh.
It’s compact. It looks like a real nice lil’ package.

I hear it is as advertised; rather choice.
For whatever reason, nesr doesn’t seem to want to work intermittently, for periods of up to 24hrs for me. I thought it had been hacked or some shit.
I picked it up Wednesday, finally got a chance Thursday eve to take it out for a bit.
I’m pretty smitten with it.
As described, it lives up to the hype and was well worth the wait.
I’m not a guy that needs big horsepower. I want enough to get me around, but I’m not into excess of most any sort. This thing fits that ethos.
Anything you’ve already read about it is pretty true. The weight is nice and low, so it feels much lighter than it is to ride, pick up (mine fell over idling in the grass in my yard before I could even ride it) and push it around the garage or whathaveyou.
Stock suspension is fine so far, but I haven’t come close to exploring the limits of what it’s capable of off-road, as I’m on dad duty or at work, it’s summer and I have an 8yo to tend to.
I’ll spend a few days on it over the weekend of the 20th, and it’ll certainly get dirtier then, but in the meantime, getting out will be sporadic at best.
I’ll do my best to answer any questions.

It looks low and kinda fat...how is it off road?

No. That is not the one.
The internet is aflutter over the -R. That is not an -R.
That is a base model that probably won't go anywhere without some incentives on the tank.
They are a fine scooter. Congrats Mr. Ripper

I’ve since ridden it in the woods, and through some big sugary, sandy whoops down this way.
It is astonishingly capable off-road. The only way you can gauge that you’re on a big bike is the width between the knees.
Stock R suspension is way better than I anticipated as well.

This is the unicorn.
I’ve said it on record now.
I put it through basically every possible terrain in New England over the course of a 4 day weekend trip that yielded 750ish miles door to door. It’s that fucking good.
It doesn’t exactly breath fire, but it’s certainly got enough.
Everything else is really just fucking awesome, plain and simple.

My only concern with this bike is whether it is all-day comfortable. My buddy and I regularly do 12-16 hour day rides, anywhere from 400-600 miles per day, so my biggest demand is all day comfortable ergos. The 790R seems considerably more cramped than a big ADV bike.
Everything else checks the boxes, though.
