    leathers

ok guys on my quest to make it on the track for September next on the list is gear. i got a set of alpinestars smx-6 boot and gp plus r gloves. so with that i will need a set of leathers and a new helmet. right now im focused on leathers. what would be a good dollar point to start at. i see some suits as low as 300 bucks and the go up to 3500. i dont want to go to cheap and not get good protection. im looking at the 800-1000 dollar range. i see some good sales right now. what should i look for in a good suit.

Your target price range puts you into a bunch of good off the shelf size options. Custom will run you a bit more, but depending on your build may not be necessary. If you're wandering NHMS this weekend look me up and while we chat about your EX troubleshooting I can show you what a suit at the bottom of the barrel looks like vs higher up the food chain.

As with helmets, fit is #1.

Post up your size (height/weight/chest), plenty of guys here have old/extra suits, and since we're all localish, you could try some on before you buy.
Don't forget you also need a back protector.

I did not buy new sight unseen until I had several used sets of the same brand, and knew exactly what fit me. One-pieces are tough to guess at fit! After breaking my collarbone I'm wondering if the airbag suits might have been a wiser investment. I did get some rash from a suit that was too large and twisted on my arm, grinding through the stretchy layer (of the suit AND my arm...)

    That sounds shitty.
I'm going to Cycle Gear in Connecticut to try on a few suits.

Cycle gear will have Sedici and Bilt (their two entry-level "house" brands)

Seriously, used suits are the way to go - I wear a top-of-the-line Astars suit that retailed for $1500 that I got for like $400 with no damage. Even if you pay $50 for a professional cleaning/conditioning it's still well worth it.

Ya I will look into the used market. I just have no idea how things will fit.

Premium Motorcycle Leathers, Jackets, Gloves, Textile Gear and More! has custom suits for very reasonable price. He's a member on SVRider as well.

I got my two-piece at Revzilla when things went on closeout at the end of the year.

    Re: leathers

If you are serious about racing and plan to do it for a season, go to Vanson. Go there, get measured and get a custom made suit. They are extremely well made and have the best built in armor that will absolutely help you in a wreck. I still have the suit I bought in 1996 when I first got on a track and had countless crashes and always walked away. It has been repaired two many times to count and most of the repairs were done while racing LRRS at the track for free. Listening please BEFORE EVERYONE HERE STARTS BASHING them, customer service is not their forte but quality is. They are made in the USA and in New England, at least the custom suits are. I have nothing to do with them either just love the quality.

I'm right over the mass line if you want to try my suit on. It's a Joe rocket size 46.

    Re: leathers

So, yeah, if you haven't caught on, asking about leathers can be like asking a motorcycle forum which oil is best... Common thread among most of the posts is get something that fits right first and foremost. If you get that right you've covered a lot of the bases.

    Re: leathers

Got an email from Vanson and they have a 15% off sale going on. If you go to the Fall River store, they usually have a rack of used suits for sale you can try on. Bought my first suit there, used.

    Re: leathers

I'd echo the suggestion about going used first and figuring out what you like before dropping the coin on a brand new suit. You may figure out you like a certain fit better, a certain type of aero hump, certain mix of leather and stretch fabric etc. There's a lot to it, so give your wallet the benefit of easing into it and having the ability to change your mind.

    Re: leathers

Vanson and others can be negotiated with on overstock, especially when they're having a sale. This is a good route to consider if you fit well in an off the rack size. Best to do that in person so you can verify fit, then bust out the Yankee trader in all of us.
