A " is this normal" question.

I am relitivly new to streetbikes, so bare with me.

I have notice if I attempt to put my bike into 1st gear from nuetral, slowly, it seems to kind of not go in at first. Almost as if the gears are still moving around, and the clutch hasn't fully engaged.

The bike doesn't move at all when its in gear, and I am holding the lever. So the cable doesn't need to be adjusted.

Other times it just goes in real hard.

The bike only has 3k mile's. That leads me to believe it is just normal. I know what a worn, or slipping clutch feels like on a car, and it doesn't feel at all like that.

    Any input?

A " is this normal" question.

My clutch is fine and my bike does the same thing. I'm not sure why it is happening, but I just kick it firmly and quickly and it will pop right into 1st.

I am also curiouse to why you can't slowly slide it into first.

Why would you want to slide it into 1st gear slowly??? It's not meant to do that....so son't do it.

A " is this normal" question.

99.99% of all shifting and falce neutral problems can be solved with (not in any special order)

    1> more positive shifting techniquue
2> clean and lube shift linkage (take apart if necessary)
    3> shift linkage adjustment
4> clutch adjustment ( the real clutch adjustment, not just fiddling with the cables)
5> chain tension (too tight a chain will bind transmission, and wear countershaft bearings)
6> OIL..... most bikes share oil in transmission , clutch & engine, dirty oil will affect shifting

I've found that shifting from neutral to first while standing still is not going to be as smooth as shifting while riding, no matter what bike you're on.

Also if the oil is thick then things are spining or has pressure through fluid friction.

If the clutch throw out rod is adjustable ..do it

Same here. I usually go from neutral to 1st after lifting my foot off the ground, so I use my whole foot to kick it in. One time I was in neutral with my foot on the peg, and my other foot on the ground, so I rotated my foot forwards and it wasn't quick enough.

I used to have the same problem. I found if I just let the clutch out a tiny bit in neutral, just to rotate the internals a smidge, it'll shift right into 1st.
I think I might try the little throttle blip. Sounds like a similar function. Save wear and tear on the clutch cable if it works.
