hmm.... that brings up an interesting question... if the weight difference between the front & rear wheels is substancial, would that kinda skrew w/ the handling characteristics?

I know a guy in Hawaii who raced a Hawk with a F3 front and Technomagnesio rear. Didn't have any issues.

the front wheeel will change the andling charecterisitics, make it lighter, quicker, etc. It will also make it less stable, thus mandating the need for a dampener.

The rear wheel reduces the rotatiing mass under acceleration. A lighter wheel spins up faster.

If you were to put only one wheel on, go with the front. As long as you have a dampener.

actually, a dampener is the LAST thing you wanna put on a bike no matter what... DON'T listen to Eric & get a dampener... a wet front tire is a dangerous thing to mess w/... get a damper instead

So it seems that the rear one would be better to have first, correct?

I most likely won't be able to the other one until the 07 season.

talking about steering damper (or dampener): what is a decent aftermarket for short $$$ (ie. <$200)

I'd advise to forget about getting trick rims and spend the money on other stuff that will make more of performance difference. Start with not cheaping out on a steering damper.

You want cheap weight savings check yourself out... if you got any fat lose it.

Look at the freaks in MotoGP...

    Biaggi - 64kg
    Barros - 70kg
    Edwards - 66kg
    Tamada - 60kg
    Checa - 69kg
    Roberts - 67kg
    Gibernau - 70kg
    Hopkins - 68kg
    Elias - 55kg
    Battaini - 67kg
    Melandri - 61kg
    Rolfo - 68kg
    Rossi - 59kg
    Nakanao - 65kg
    Capirossi - 59kg
    Hoffman - 68kg
    Byrne - 68kg

    average 65kg - 143lbs

If you weighed anywhere near that you'd probably have a average 50-80lb weight advantage over almost everyone in amateur racing.

    It's true. It works.

I took a huge dump right before my last race and shaved over a second off.

Steering damper has been on my list for a while, but this is about weight loss

I am trying to put the bike through a bit of a diet. Rims being the heaviest rotational mass on the bike, they allow a big loss right there.

I am 5'11" and weight in at 170Lbs w/ gear. I don't want to starve myself to go faster.

    thanks for the suggestion tho...

Cheapest place I know of is http://www.superbikesupply.com/

Ask for Brad and tell him Cmac from 1000RRnet.

Once you buy from him you will never go back. Best prices on parts.

    7lbs = 1 HP

there are a billion other things you should do first to go faster and wheels should be towards the bottom along with a carbon fiber gas tank. things like that are items you but when there is nothing left to do

Hey Alex, u wanna take this one or should I? (ie, 7lbs does not always equal 1hp... it depends on your original hp/weight ratio)

If i had to choose between removing 10 lbs from the body somewhere or removing 10 lbs of wheels i'd go w/ the wheels... only downside is the cost. Lighter wheels is a double whammy... u get better handilng AND acceleration... if you just lighten SPRUNG weight the difference is felt more under acceleration than handling.

Don't revert to squidlyness, don't get all deep with sprung and unsprung weight, you know there will be no noticeable performance gains, especially on a street motorcycle. Oxx rips the SV on the racetrack and I bet he has never considered aftermarket wheels. This SV isn't riden to it's potential and just about every other mod will be less money and more improvement to the bike. Someone short on money doesn't buy trick wheels on a street riden bike for performance. I'll put $10 that he's trying to impress people with a cool custom bike, or some talk about how he needed improved performance and power all the while avoiding the advice of people that know what they're talking about.

I'm like the House of motorcycles.

Are you saying that if money wasn't an issue you'd rather pull 10lbs off the body than your rims? Nowhere did i say he should get these, I just layed out the pros & cons & left opinion out of it... feel free to correct me if i'm wrong though.

I have no doubt in my mind that the money he wants to spend on wheels could be better served elsewhere... no doubt whatsoever, especially knowing how expensive wheels are... trackdays, suspension, proper gear etc.... but having ridden a bike w/ mag Marchesini's, it's a tastey mod.

c'mon Jay... if you stumbled upon a set for cheap, you'd be on em like... well... sluts on you.

    My Priority list

1st - safety & safety gear (function comfort, proper maintenance of bike)
2nd - Rider (skills, knowledge & seat time)
    3rd - Tyres
    4th - suspension
    5th - Wheels (if allowed)
    6th - engine mods

This isn't of course the order that everyone would use, but it works for me.

And oh yeah enough beer in the cooler or frig.

I would disagree. Light wheels are the first thing to get in performance terms. Why?

They make the bike handle better and take a lot of load off the suspension parts. Your valving, springs, oil etc will all do less work. It would be significant enough to require different valving. Light wheels should be in place BEFORE you spend the bucks on new suspension bits. Otherwise you'll dial in a set-up only to change it when you get the new wheels.

It seems exspensive, but it's the foundation of your whole set-up. In roadracing in general, and especially at Loudon, it's much more important to have your bike handle than to make it go fast.

That said, I haven't bought lightweight wheels yet. What a hypocrite I am!

I'm taking donations for the lightweight wheel fund though

And when you can only afford one for a street bike with stock suspension you still think that's where your money should go to get more power out of the bike?

Not for power output, but for handling it is surely a priority. It will make the stock suspension stuff work better, maybe negating the need for changing all that stuff just for a street ride.
