Local shop refusing to mount tires,,,,

I just got off the phone with my local bike shop. I asked to make an appointment to put a new front tire on my bike and was told that due to insurance company regulations he couldnt do it unless i bought the tire from him. Since i already had the tire thats not happening. Anyone else run into this crap? My feeling is when an insurance company can dictate how you run your business down to that level its time to get another ins. co.

I think the "insurance company" line is a load of crap, they just don't want to do it unless they can make their markup on the tire as well

its just their way of being a dick and make it sound like someone else is the dickhead

Having worked in Bike shops both that will and wont mount tires that weren't bought there, I can see both sides of the coin. It's not an insurance thing, that just makes a good story. More and more bike shops are mounting tires not purchased at said shop but charging an extra $10 or so per mounting. There are others on NESR that mount tires. I'll let them speak up for themselves.

'Welcome to The Outback, will there just be the two of you?'

-'Yes. Oh, and here's a steak. Can you have the cook sear this up for me? Medium well, and be sure to use that rub! Ew...almost forgot these potatoes. Here, give these to him too'

Relax, just playing Devil's Advocate. I can see both sides as well. Don't necessarily agree, but I can see why they won't. Yet another reason why I don't patronize dealers' service shops...

Call them and tell them this. Tell them that they lost you as a customer the second they felt it necessary to tell you a bullshit lie.

I understand why some shops don't like to do it, but at least own your decision, don't blame it on somebody else.

Like Sheppo said, they could just charge more for tires purchased elsewhere. Guess they don't want the business. Go elsewhere.

I had a shop tell me that if I didn't buy tires from them I would need to leave my bike there for up to 3 days...so when they "had time" they could mount them. Of course if I bought from them they could turn it around on the spot.

The insurance thing is pretty funny if in fact it is a lie...nothing like adding insult to injury.

If charging me 0.5 hr of your labor rate, plus a few bucks to cover the machine and overhead to mount two motorcycle tires isn't worth your time, just say so.

    In the meantime:

Re: Local shop refusing to mount tires,,,,

I've never run into that, though I've heard about it plenty. The way I see it is, I usually pay around $25 per tire, including disposal of the old. In the end, that's $50 dollars I'd end up giving to someone else because that fool wanted to make stupid amounts of money. 50 is better than losing a customer.

I'd love to know actual dealer cost on a set of BT-003's, if anyone wants to share info. 120/70 190/55. I'm baffled as to why so many places haven't figured out that if you mark them up a little, you're gonna sell a whole lot more than what you'd sell at or near MSRP.

What are the rates for mounting tires at Seacoast, Dave? I'm sure they have different rates based on if you bought the tire there and also if the rims are still on the bike or not.

My machine is simple, but it works. Did a BMW rear on Saturday. It's not a No-Mar, but it doesn't gouge the crap out of them either.

$20. I'm around tonight. PM me if you are interested. I'm 5 minutes off Rt.119 in Fitzwilliam.

If you are anal about your rims being perfect, it would be in your best interest to bring it to Tricky Mike. You are welcome to take a look at all my bike wheels to see how my machine can do on them.

Dude...I'm not an employee of Seacoast. Best bet is to call them! Talk to Jason and tell him I gave you his name!

+1 on Tricky Mike, he did mine this weekend, took longer to drive there then it did for him to mount and balance them... def worth the 20 a tire

Before everyone around here got set-up for tire changing, I've run into all these situations. I've been to shops that wouldn't, I've been to shops that wanted some rediculous rates for installing 'em purchased elsewhere...

On a similar note: I've had people come into our shop here with their own paper and get mad that we were still gonna charge 'em to run the job...
