    Lock issue

It seems that you can pick certain types of barrel-style locks with a ball point pen...

I just managed to do it on a laptop lock here..

Others that are rumored to be vulnerable:

Kryptonite Bicycle U-Locks (Yah the ones everyone says are the best)
Many motorcycle disc locks (Kryptonite makes some of them)
    H-D ignition cylinders. :O

You just separate the pieces of the pen and jam the open end of the pen cylinder into the lock and twist/bend it around and if you're lucky it will hit all the tumblers and the lock opens.

Just something to watch out for... sell your kryptonite stock!

Its even more effective if you file small V shaped notches into the barrel of the pen...

    Hence my kryptonite combo lock!

for those bastards who stole my pedal bike this way!

    Cheers,
    Chris

But when we ride very fast motorcycles, we ride with immaculate sanity. We might abuse a substance here and there, but only when it's right. The final measure of any rider's skill is the inverse ratio of his preferred Traveling Speed to the number of bad scars on his body. It is that simple: If you ride fast and crash, you are a bad rider. If you go slow and crash, you are a bad rider. And if you are a bad rider, you should not ride motorcycles.

    Hey Ben,

I bet if you left that laptop outside under the bush on the far corner of the parking garage, I'd be mighty obliged

I hadn't ever locked my laptop in the office anyway.. I take it home.

Now that I saw this I just tried it (I have a lock in my office but no key for it)

I now realize I sold my old Kryptonite Disc lock... damn I wanted to try and pick it when I got home.

I only used the disc lock when I went to RPI (Troy NY) to visit anyway!

    Ben

but the real question is how long did it take you and what did you use for a tension wrench?

The $17 laptop locks are a joke though, they have cut grooves in the key cyl so you think its a 6/8 pin lock when really its like 3 if that. But still most cyl. style locks are cheese if you have a bic biro bp pen and a leatherman micra handy, unfortunately for us . I guess they figure the average white-collar type to not be carrying these objects though

FWIW-You can pick just about any lock w/ two heavy duty paper clips that've been straightened if you know what to listen & feel for...

I just spoke with customer service and they will have a remedy by 9-17-04. And yes I tried it and opened my lock in less than 5 mins the 1st time, then less than 20 seconds the second time.

    Holy Crap!

I do not have one of those but my ignition is a barrel thing. I am going to try opening it when it stops raining.

don't ya know I can't find a bic anywhere in the house! Looking at my lock, all the pins are different lenghts, and they open at different levels(not all the way down), and lastly there is a notch in the center cylinder that needs to turn..... Gotta find a bic
