Gotta give credit to Chris "Jersey" Orcutt on this one

Traction Erag made a post about this Beta electric bike on social media and Jersey's response to it was something along the lines of, not like Beta has ever had electrical issues on their bikes. Made me laugh a little.

When attending two week long trips where the Beta Canada demo fleet were the bikes provided the organizers did have difficulty keeping batteries in the bikes as for some unknown reason they would eat them regularly. I know full well that these bikes are not a Beta product as much as a rebranded other company's product but the joke still make me laugh.

there is a group of older guys that ride HVD frequently together that are a riot, they're super loud and just seem like a total crew ... one of them rides an XTrainer and has battery/electrical problems every ride apparently. he jumps the bike with a screwdriver

one day i was down there solo pulled in next to them and they started with the 'ah, another Beta, let's see if he makes it on the trail.' with the big belly laughs. they ride pumpkins ... i started chatting saying he could just fix the thing for good but ... that would require fixing it for good.

but back on topic, i feel like all the e-Stuff is going to upset a lot of people as it matures. i almost bit the bullet on an SX-E (any flavor but was ready to pick up the orange) until i saw how many issues the batteries and controllers are having. figured those bikes were solid by now but nope.

    Agree 10/10 ^

Still enjoying watching the market evolve with more offerings.

I’m wondering if the market around 20-40ish mile trail/MX bikes is the sweet spot for 2 wheel e-motorcycles. Anything bigger and range is a significant issue. Anything smaller and it’s an e-bike that can’t handle serious motorcycle duty. If that’s the case; that’s good for us weekly/local trail riders looking for options that can do a 20 mile weekly fix after work. Not good for long distance dual sport, street, or touring motorcyclists looking to get on the electric train. .

yeah, have the same thoughts ... i think if/when i take the plunge, it will be for a small'ish trail bike that can do around 30mi, which would be plenty for where i'd expect to explore with it. i can't see any of the current offerings being better than what i have right now for trail riding, they would all be a step backwards in more ways than one.

not sure what brand or model but i was down at HVD a few weeks ago and there was a guy with an electric trials bike that sounds f'in awesome and looked like mad fun. he would be at the truck, jam straight up to the tech stuff up top, then back to the truck. was wondering if just to take a break or if it was for a quick charge boost. will have to chat with him if i see him again.

    100% you all should

trials in itself is a core motorcycling skillset that will translate very heavily into becoming a better dirt bike rider

an electric trials bike would fit the range limitations, maintenance/noise/emissions free, and you could ride it Big Pete's Nature preserve. But I would 100% need it to have a clutch.

I'm at the point in this thread where I'm wondering who will be first - Paul? Clinton? surprise entry from Pete?

@Kurlon - do you think these Surron light bee/ultra bee/cake/etc. have enough to do some laps at a Kart track with the right tires? I have a huge problem, wrongfully attempting to consolidate multiple duties to a single platform (690E for dirt bike, street bike, and sumo duty anyone?) instead of having several tools for each respective job. I guess it's the residual cheap indian in me, trying to get a good deal and "buy one, get two bikes". My weird mind wants to justify a $6,500 electric trail bike if I can also adapt it for other uses a few times per year with a tire/gearing change.

    Re: Looking for something....electric

Having ridden a pretty uncorked Surron around a bit, unsure of the model, I would say that my biggest concern for tracking one of them would be braking. The one I rode used large mountain bike brakes which, though they worked well for the little bit of riding that I did, did not instill confidence that they would not overheat and become an issue if ridden hard like a track environment would lead to.

Understanding that I am physically larger than quite a few of you my overall thoughts were that I felt as though I was riding a beefy bicycle at speeds that I would not be comfortable riding a beefy bicycle at for very long. Short bursts were fun but extended high speed operation wouldn't give me the warm and fuzzies. YMMV.

That being said, if the disposable income is there to have one around as a toy and the opportunity came up to ride one on a kart track as long as I went into it with the mindset of having fun on my beefy bicycle it would be a hoot on a kart track.

I'd consider another dirty toy if that Beta proved to be a solid runner. I wonder how much it would be for a 2nd battery to leave in the truck charging while I rode.

I got to ride a Surron around Boxshop in motard trim. For sure you could have fun on one on a kart track, but I wouldn’t see it scratching the same itch as a real ‘tard. It still feels like a heavy mountain bike, they just don’t ‘carve’ like a motorcycle to me, or even a pitbike?

Well, figure a bigger 60v 63Ah batt for a Surron can be had for $2500, I’m going to ballpark $1850 to $2k for the Beta.

They do make a dual front disk brake option these days. Bunch of brake upgrades if your willing to spend the cash.

Yikes; doesn’t “carve” as well as a pit bike? Pit bikes are already less fun than a full size Supermoto, or big bike track day.

That’s still fine; the YZ is good enuf’ 1-2 times a year I do a kart track day. Trail runs are my priority.

    Re: Looking for something....electric

Depends on the pitbike... my 70 rocked at Loudon...

The Surron was exactly the wrong combination of heavy center riding on glorified mountain bike bits at the front and rear. So long-ish travel, but not beefy enough to not be flexi-flyering at the speeds/loads the bike can generate. Similarly the wheels are NOT up to the sideloads, plus the narrow rims mean you've got SKINNY rubber and tiny contact patches. Net result, I had fun, but wasn't really all that impressive on pavement with it when not straight up.

Woods riding, it should be MUCH more fun.

    Re: Looking for something....electric

yeah, but that 70 was something else...actually 50-200cc XR's were just so darned awesome as everything bikes, that they could be adapted into some many different facets of motorcycling and still be fun. XR's are legendary, no electric bike will replace the feeling of the XR's from 1970's to early 2000's.

but for those that don't follow my other thread, there was an ultra bee at the local trail head:

it worked great for him. Up and back with 40% charge to spare.

that confirms it; that's what I want with 21/18"

    Re: Looking for something....electric

"standard" style scooter with decent electric capabilities, still a bit $$$
    CSC E-RT3 electric scooter
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/urbanites...130000472.html

A southern California motorbike dealer is adding to its electric two-wheeler fleet after unveiling a new e-scooter that could shake up the market.

CSC Motorcycles has announced pre-sales for its E-RT3 model, and the specs of the machine are enticing, to say the least.

Available in charcoal with either storm blue or wizard green color options, the E-RT3 offers a range of up to 137 miles on a single charge. While factors such as speed and weight of the driver will impact that potential distance, that’s still hugely impressive.

The 72V96Ah lithium-ion battery can be fully charged in just four hours with a fast charger, and it can go from 30-80% charged in just 70 minutes.

And with a top speed of 75 mph and a pre-order price of $6,995 — as Electrek tweeted about — it’s easy to see why CSC is making a name for itself in the electric vehicle space......

According to Electrek, the closest competitor to the E-RT3 in the electric scooter market in terms of performance is the BMW CE04. That model also provides a top speed of 75 mph and a similar range. However, with the BMW at $13,000, it’s easy to see why the CSC model might be a more favorable option.....

The E-RT3 is expected to begin arriving in customers’ driveways by November 2023, per the CSC website, with pre-orders available now with a fully refundable $300 deposit.

20lbs lighter than a 125, you're always in the right gear, your feet are always planted since your brakes are on your hands, 2 hour ride time is fine for most adults that are lucky to get 2 hours away (with no home maintenance), and it has reverse

I stand by it; the sweet spot of electrification and moto is a 25 mile/2 hour trail bike (or recreational MX bike).

    Change my mind.

At Maeving we are driven by two things: the desire to make the best electric motorcycles possible, and the belief that this is most readily achieved by harnessing Britain’s heritage in motorcycle engineering.

lol. that's not how heritage works when you're making EVs, but the bikes do look very cool.
