When they run theses bikes at pike's peak, they put beepers on them so the fans and corner workers you could hear them coming.

Europe mandates EVs/hybrids make a certain level of sound when moving as a safety measure, mostly for pedestrians. It's why Hondas sound like they've got a slightly muffled angelic chorus under the hood at low speeds, or my Jeep sounds like every wheelbearing is shot under 35mph.

Isn't that normal for a jeep?

I'm sure louder pipes do in fact save lives, as well as high vis gear and full face helmets. But yes, some are just ridiculously loud and over the top. I'd prefer someone hear me coming vs sneaking up on them like a ninja.

Honestly...I can't remember the last motorcycle cop I've seen on the east coast that wasn't in a parade.

IMO, every item of hi viz and more protective materials was forced on them over the objection of their union. If it were up to them it would be wool, leather, jackboots, no gloves.

I should record it, but it's damn close to nails on a chalkboard. Of all the noise options at Jeep's disposal, they chose THAT?!

Cambridge used to have BMW PD bikes. Not sure if that is still the case.

Disagree on one detail, anyway: those crossed white canvas belts. One of our neighbors told me that in a fight, they made great handles for the bad guys.

He also said their number one safety hazard was pedestrians who would look right at them - lights and sirens flashing - and step out in a crosswalk.

And he is a fan of ABS. Boston has a number of streets that are brick or cobblestone slicker than whale snot when wet. He’d taken several slides.

Re: Do loud pipes save lives?

If one is getting louder pipes to improve the safety of their motorcycle, that is an ill-informed decision every time.

If one is getting louder pipes *just because they are louder,* that encompasses a superset of decisions that are also, in my opinion, some form of dumbassery.

There are some half-decent reasons to get aftermarket pipes that happen to be louder, and if people want louder pipes they should learn to at least fake interest in those more correct, tasteful, snob-approved reasons.

If loud pipes save lives, wouldn't all the police Harleys have straight pipes?

Re: Do loud pipes save lives?

All kidding aside...I bought a Fatbob years ago with a custom 2-1 exhaust that exited out the side very close to the engine. It was the first thing I took off. I replaced it with a nice set of Vance and Hines. I left the baffles in as I thought it was loud enough with them.

Keith's R1 that I bought had race baffles. They were perfect.

The Termis on the 848 I owned for a minute were also awesome.

Loads of moto-cops out here, particularly in the town my shop is located in. Predominantly BMW’s but I still see some Honda ST’s as well.

I sympathize with those officers from May to October!
