    I love me a twin.

Just picked up a 97 Suzuki TL1000S. Gawd this bike has a shit ton of power and when you crack it open the sound and pull just force a smile. It is in great shape for the year. The only concern I have is that this bike is going to be used at NJMP and it seems like some wind protection would really aid the bike when at those speeds as it forces your helmet back and you really have to work to keep your head forward. The full fairing did come with the bike but I am just wondering if there is any way to keep the fightered look and still redirect the wind. Anyways, here are the pics.

Enjoy the TL bud! tlzone.net will become your friend. My 97 is still a fun bike to ride even 13 years and roughly 60,000 miles later.

I happen to have a full set, minus the tank, of primer black "track" plastics sitting in my basement that you might be able to borrow for the NJMP days. Looks like you would have a problem putting them on the bike though with that unorthodox location for the steering stabilizer and the lack of the mounts up top around the speedo.

We'll talk about this stuff up at the track this weekend.

Thanks for the offer man! Yea I know I will need a front fairing stay and possibly an air box that has the ram air tubes.

TL's are great. Keep an eye on the rotary damper mounting bolts. They can loosen up making the damper move around and crack where it bolts to the frame. Also some frames cracked up by the stearing head.

That's a nice looking TL! Did the S models come with the lower fairing? Or did you just put it on from an R?

Re: I love me a twin.

The TLS and TLR are pretty much completely different bikes with regards to frame and body work so the belly pan that is on Snake's bike was made for the TLS (It also looks like his uppers might be a bit different then stock). They share wheels, some engine architecture and a few other things but otherwise two different bikes.

As far as the rotary damper goes, the stock set up was attempt by Suzuki to change/revolutionize how shock absorbers were used. It didn't work out so well and obviously they went back to using standard shocks on future models. That being said, Ohlins made a replacement unit as well as a company called Bitubo and possibly a couple of others, the two most popular are the Ohlins and the Bitubo though. The Bitubo replaces both the spring on a stick, which is the red spring on the right side of your bike, and the rotary damper with a single unit. If I am not mistaken the Ohlins replaces only the rotary damper. The spring on a stick, SOS, is a common issue with the TLS where the rubber bushings wind up binding on their pivot points and causing an annoying squeaking noise until something finally wears through and the SOS actually breaks in half causing some "minor" issues. Keep an eye on it and keep the bushings lubed up. Might not be very easy to find a new replacement shock set up for this bike new as most companys haven't been making new parts for a bike last sold new in the early 2000s, the used market for these bikes is there though so shouldn't be a big deal to find something if you need it.

As Ryno mentioned, make sure your rotary damper mounts are tight and not moving around and also check your frame up by the head stock as some TLS have had issues in those areas.

tlzone.net has a ton of information and a fairly dedicated group of individuals with a wealth of knowledge about these bikes and you can find a solution to just about any issue you might have on their board. Not trying to overly plug another board but the people over there have saved my ass multiple times with getting things fixed on my bike without going to a shop.

Take a look here at my TLS folder in photobucket if you're interested. I'd be happy to answer any questions.... My fairings, uppers & lower came from Sharkskinz.

Very creative, nice stuff. I'm in CT (Wilton) and (MCH) right now for a couple of days, MCH not far from you, actually.

    Enjoy.
