    Re: Luxo sport tourers

This is a segment that has been endlessly debated, but let's not let that stop us. I have done week-long rides on a Honda gl1800F6B, taken a 2007 VFR800 cross country and will be taking a multi-week ride on a VFR1200X this year. In short, I ride, whether I tour, sport-ride or sport-tour is for others to judge. I ride.

From a longest day of a SS1000 on the F6b (750 is longest on the VFR800), to a more typical 400-500 mile day, I've ridden in everything except snow.

From this individual perspective, almost any bike with ergos that suit a particular rider can work for long distance, multi-day riding. I would guess that the VFR800 lies on the sportier side of this, while the F6B is on the "rolling sofa" end. In the middle, the purpose-built ST1300, R1200RT and Concourse handle this territory with ease.

But I've seen a lot of different things on the road and a lot of people doing what I do on their HD's.

For me, one deciding factor is a combination of long haul comfort and day ride fun. I do a long, multi day ride every year, but most of my seat time is what we all do, an hour here and there to have fun, a little commuting, and a full day when the opportunity arises. This is where I'm counting on the VFR1200X to provide some fun factor that the F6B lacked without the long ride ergo sacrifices of the VFR800.

    My $0.02

Have you seen this FJR? 2013 Yamaha FJR 1300 a Sport Touring Motorcycle - motorcycles/scooters - by owner - vehicle automotive bike sale
My friend got an older ST1100 and went cross country. I think these "sport" tourers (ST, FJR, Conc, RT) are a good balance if you have a long commute and still desire some fun. I have had my 2007 VFR for 7 years now and it is setup for touring (helbars, sargent seat, full luggage, GPS) and enjoy it tremendously. I put >700 miles a few weekends ago. But, it is still not in the same league as the ST and FJR for comfort.

Excellent post! 90 is the magic number. It is the right amount of power for roadwork with nothing extra. The older VFR motor had character for days. I think it's Honda's best offering to date in that regard. And if you want to make noise, a pipe sounds REALLY good on that gear driven V4. For a Honda, it's as close as you'll ever get to the character of a Ducati. I also think it looks better than the bike you off loaded.

He's not ready. But yeah, those..

I'd seen the '13. Looks like his price is down. Wonder if it'll be even lower by the time I'm ready to move. (This fall, I hope.)
The '15. Man, that's fucking perfect.

More and more I'm warming to the idea of a way too heavy FJR as my next. Already dreaming of curling up behind that big fat screen on the interslab.

    Re: Luxo sport tourers

Life isn't short enough to rush this one. It's not like I'm bike-less or anything. In a couple weeks the future missus and I are going to hit the demo tents at the classic hard. We'll have a better picture of our plan by then.

Or are you just saying that because you want to steal the ol' 'strom from me.

Looking like the lineup will be:

    - FJR1300 primary road meister, probably a low-ish mile gen 3
    - SV650 for the track days and hooliganism
    - WR450 for the racing, track days
    - KTM 200 for the dirt

Maybe plate the WR and use it for dirt road burning if I ever get tired of racing. (Seems likely.) Keep the SM wheels as a backup toy for track days, ice wheels for the winters.

The sound is intoxicating. But this V4 is really pushing my old SV1000 motor out of the running for one of the best I've ridden on the street. power was just over 110 hp and torque for days. I said it 4 years ago, if Honda redid the vfr and made it a 1000. I would ride the wheels of that thing. They were close with the 14 redesign.

National Powersports has a '14 Honda Interceptor with less than 1k miles for $8500. Go see Dave Hemstreet there, tell him you're an LRRS guy and I bet he'll let you take it for a rip.

    Re: Luxo sport tourers

Demo'ed some stuff this weekend. Hit the Yami tent solo on Friday; FZ07 (finally), new Super Tenere and FJR again. Still hate the S10. Still love the FJR. And really dig the FZ07. Blows my mind that they can make a p-twin 700 great on one bike and a p-twin 1200 blow on another. That motor is a disappointment; sounds like a box of rocks and definitely does not move the bike like it should.

Demo'ed the FJR two up on Saturday. Still great, even with 2. The electronic suspension coped with the extra weight well and the 'tour mode' throttle mapping was smooth enough for my new-to-riding passenger.

Demo'ed a Moto Guzzi California two-up in the hopes that it could be a standin for the Road King (it is not). She liked it but I did not. They put waaaaaay too much flywheel on that motor. And the instrumentation and switchgear is terrible.

Did a solo demo on a Ducati Multistrada 1200S. Wholey shit is that bike the whole package: Amaze-balls handling. Stunning motor. Great electronics. Comfortable. And zomigawd fast. .. Just not sure I trust it to always run.

I was about to ask the same question about the FJR!
Must have been an interesting couple of day hoping from the FZ07, to FJR, to a Multi, etc. I bet I spent the 1st 1/2 hour trying o adjust to my Streetfighter (1sr ride this season) after riding the FJR all spring.
