    MA EZ Pass

Just signed up for my first.

Suggestions for mounting? The VFR1200x has a screen, but I'd prefer it out of my line of sight.

Does it need to bee seen by the scanner?

Has anyone experienced problems using these on motorcycles?

    Steve

Saddlebag, pocket, or tank bag is fine, as long as it's not wrapped in foil

I keep mine I'm my front fairing pocket. (This bike may not have one, but you're familiar with the pocket).

I always put mine in the map window of my tank bag, and only when I knew I was gong to be using a toll road. the rest of the time, it rattled about the interior of said tank bag.

Depends on the toll system. The new gantries should be fine in a pocket. The old tollbooths sometimes have vehicle sensors (weight or magnet) that arent always triggered by a bike. So in that case it's a crapshoot no matter where you have it mounted.

Another option is to find a spot on the dash or behind the windscreen to apply the 3M Dual-Lock plastic velcro.

I don't go through tolls often but I've used EZPass every time on a bike. Tank bag map pocket or behind the windscreen are my usual spots. However I'm pretty sure I've used it while it was inside the tank bag too.

Really? I thought they all used RFID, and the plaza's broadcast a signal as you approach that triggers the transponder to communicate.

I'm not sure if there are any appreciable differences with the open road tolling they do now but the older tollbooth based scanners used an inductive loop in the ground to detect the vehicle and start the scan (or to trigger the cameras if the scan was unsuccessful). In MA, around 60% to 70% of the time I used to be able to hug the very left or right edge of the lane and go through the toll without the system even acknowledging I was there.

Very important to register your bike's plate number on your EZ Pass account. If your transponder does not trigger the sensor EZ Pass first checks if the plate in question is registered. If it is then that account is charged the toll, just watch your statement.

I got stuck at a gated toll in NYC once. Had the ezpass in my tank bag. A toll worker eventually had to take the ezpass and tap it a few times on the sensor. Otherwise I haven't had problems with tank bag or chest pockets.

Weird. I've had problems and gotten nastygrams from NH EzPass. Lots of fuzzy pictures of the dirty plate on my 'strom half covered from the overhang of the top box.
I have given up and now have some of the heavy duty velcro on the bottom of my windshield and mount it there. I drilled a hole through the side of the ez-pass puck and attached a lanyard just in case. On the 'strom it's well out of sight as the screen extends well below the top of the dash. But it's an eyesore when looking at the bike from the front. 'Stroms are no picasso painting anyway. So..

Didn't NH issue a thing recently where they will surcharge you if their equipment fails to pick up your ezpass? Something about an administrative fee to run your plate?

If NH runs your plate you pay the full toll and don't get the discount.

Next time I take the fairings off, I should put it in there. I like that. However, I wonder if there's any benefit to having it in line-of-sight for a camera?

None whatsoever. The cameras are only there to get your plate if the system can't read your transponder via radio.

I will provide one warning about installing under fairings. I was once some damn where in NY (Poughkeepsie area, I don't remember exactly where) and there was a bridge that was EZ Pass, with a gate and all to get on the bridge. For whatever reason my EZ Pass didn't set it off. There was a toll worker there and he made me give him my EZ Pass, which he took inside and did something with (I have no idea what) then opened my gate and gave it back.

It's an edge case, but many Goldwing guys mount there's between layers of the trunk, and if mine had been there there's basically 40 minutes of work to get it out (and back in).

I thought some took pictures from the front as well. If from the rear only, then agreed no benefit.

What happens if you say 'I forgot my pass'? I thought the cashless systems all had to be capable of doing license plate-based billing since out-of-state travelers won't have a pass.

Good question. I have no idea. This was probably 3ish years ago.

I had to shut off the bike (to use the key) to unlock the fairing pocket to give to the guy, all the while blocking traffic behind me. At the time getting out of the way was more important than getting answers.
