After 5 years living/riding in CA after growing up in NE... I can't imagine riding anymore and NOT lane-sharing.
I know this post was made years ago but I can't let this slide without calling you an asshole. You're an asshole. The benefits and risks of lane-splitting are debatable although most evidence seems to show it's safe. If it's illegal, if you disagree, that doesn't give you the right to gravely injure someone with your car. That's fucking ridiculous.
Well that was worth dredging up an 11 year old thread.
I'll take "Late to the Party" for 1000, Alex.
Yeah well, lane splitting is still illegal and considered unsafe mostly due to assholes like that. Wouldn't be unsafe if drivers didn't block of lanes and get all butt hurt. I mean, the fucking logic of that guy "waaah! Lane splitting is dangerous! Therefore I'm going to make it MORE DANGEROUS for my fellow riders!" I can't stand it. What a prick.
Guess it's not a great idea to split lanes then, eh?
Legalizing lanesplitting is a great idea, and should be supported by all motorcyclists and motorcyclist rights organizations.
it works great in CA, and in most of the civilized world.
It's one of only two things I actually miss about CA. (The other one is good cheap 24-hr Mexican food.)
I lanesplit almost daily in CA for over 20 years. I have ridden over 40,000 miles between lanes of cars.
It's a great boon to bikers, and harms no one else. Indeed it helps traffic flow for everyone.
The studies that have been done show that lanesplitting at speed differentials of <15mph, and traffic speeds of <50mph, is safer than sitting in traffic.
I hope we can get it to be legalized in as many places as possible. There is no good rational reason it shouldn't be.

Help me out here......you'll call someone an asshole for something they posted 3 years ago but at the same time will happily break the law and openly state you've been doing so for the last 10 years?
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for lane sharing and filing to the front but am having trouble connecting the dots as to why you feel a string of typed words makes that person the asshole yet you are totally in the right for breaking the law.
Frankly, I don't care what your response is but will say that the entitled motorist is the asshole and, like it or not, your post is a perfect example of that.
Jim is a dick for that post and that opinion. End of story.
Jim is an asshole....a good looking asshole...

It seems rational that one bike on the road is one less car, so get out of the way and reduce the snarl. Unfortunately, not many cagers are rational. Most are OK with me and my bike. It's that one that isn't . . .
When traffic is stopped for a long distance, and there are several feet of open space between the lanes, seems to me using that at a slow, cautious pace isn't so bad. Just don't get a ticket.
I live in CA now...it's a pretty natural thing...and formally becoming "legal"
