How is MA Rt 27 north of 16?

I'm thinking about heading north to Motorcycle Night on 7/3, since I have 7/3 and 7/4 off (go figure, a Holiday). trying to plan a route so I don't have to slab it on the highway all the way from the RI line.

Just wondered how rt 27 north is from rt 16 in Sherborn? Or north of Framingham? I realize it's a little congested through Framingham.

My idea is to just follow 27 north all the way to rt 4 in Chelmsford. Then pick up Drum Hill Rd.

Anyone have a scouting report? How is the route?

Its ok, once you get past Cochituate its good. Rt 126 is nice too.
Between Sherborne and there, its pretty pokey with many lights.
But if its not rush hour its better than the highway for sure.

Rush hour is probably the issue. I'd be leaving N Smithfield, RI at about 4:15pm, getting to the Sherborn area at about 5:15ish. Might be a little traffic at that time, especially the day before July 4th.

27 by wayland and maynard will have heavy traffic. sometimes it may backup to lower portion of 126 too.

If you are a lane splitter, traffic is less of a problem.

    What's Motorcycle Night anyway ? Where ?

    This isn't sounding good.

Anyone know of a better route from the Sherborn area to Lowell?

just re-read your timing, traffic is probably going to be a non-factor considering its going to be 5ish the day before the 4th.

    sorry!

    Sherborne to Lowell?
How long do you want to take?

I mean you could piece together alot of small back roads
to move up north... I know of one way to get toward Acton at least
that really nice but requires paying alot of attention to turns
and will take time. Like Farm Rd to Maple St...etc.

Rt 27 only has a bit of nice stuff near the golf courses and nature resesrves in Lincoln. The rest is pretty common place.

Maybe small roads to Rt 2 then 495 ?

I'm trying to avoid the highway altogether and take the most direct route to Lowell. (Motorcycle Night to be specific)

How is MA Rt 27 north of 16?

Huh... I have nothing constructive to add, just that it was interesting that Chuck's trying to find a non-highway route, and some people have said "XYZ is better than the highway/slabbing it."

Haven't been on the highway... well, not the interstate, have been on two lane state highways though. Kinda hesitant to go on something like 495, although I think eventually I might consider taking 146 to work (although I enjoy taking 122 into work better...).

I ride the highway 80% of my work commute (that's 40 of 50 miles worth of mindless highway riding alongside cagers and trucks who don't acknowledge my presence), so slabbing it on the highway is just boring.

I guess I just want to work up the testicular fortitude to go on the highway... So I can rip a nice riding wheelie down the left lane.

    j/k

Other than speed thrills and getting to places quicker, I don't see the why I'd ever need to go on the highway anyway.

It's no big deal, once you do it. What sucks is keeping a consistent speed and keeping your throttle hand and wrist happy.

actually hwy riding is much easier than back roads. thats why we don't consider it as technical.

I back road in the morning (6am), but slab it home so I won't get roast in traffic.

27 is not all that good but you can hit some nice roads off of it. Hit up half squid and see if he is going, if I can get off my lazy ass and have the bike inspected I can show you a few nice roads to take up that way.

I take 27 from medfield to Maynard to visit my sister, and its slow going from sherborn to mayanrd, a lot of traffic and 25 mph zones, and quite a few cops too. Scenic though :o
