Maine bike with no title transferring to NH

This Grom purchase has turned into a massive headache. I bought it in Maine, where they don't title vehicles 300cc and under. In order to get a title in NH, it requires a notarized bill of sale, a certified previous registration and a form 19 (i.e. inspection by state police for VIN verification). I have a bill of sale, but its not notarized. I really don't feel like driving back up to Maine, and the guy who sold it to me is extremely hard to get ahold of. I doubt I'll be able to get ahold of all of this stuff in any reasonable amount of time.

So I'm now considering going to VT route, i.e. get it titled in VT which is a little easier and doesn't require a previous registration, then transferring it over to NH. The only problem is the notarized bill of sale portion.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to get around that part to make this easy?

    Step 1: Don't call everyone here homo's.

Step 2: Reg it in VT. Super easy.

What happens if you sell it to a friend/family member, then sell it back to yourself and notarize that one?

That was a thought I had. Actually though, the VT DMV site states you need a "bill of sale", it says nothing about needing to be notarized.

It's gonna cost me ~$80 extra due to taxes and and registration cost, but it'll save me a huge headache.

Maine doesn't require a notarized bill of sale, so NH can't require one either. Bill of sale, prior reg from maine, and unfortunately you still have to do the stupid vin verification.

    Section 261:148 Permit Required.

Note, there is no requirement by NH that the bill of sale be notarized.

Correct, no notarization required for VT. So if you keep it in VT, good to go. However, if you plan to transfer it back to NH, won't you still need a bill of sale?

Re: Maine bike with no title transferring to NH

A bill of sale in VT is very simple too. I registered a 1986 KLR250 a few years ago with a bill of sale that was written on a napkin.
    All it needs is
"I ____previous owner_____ sell one ______bike______ (VIN number ____vin number of bike______) to _______buyer______ as is no warranty for $___money_____"
Then have both people sign it, DONE
There's also nothing saying you can't just keep it registered in VT forever. Renewals can be done online VERY easily.

I think I'm going to go this route, registering in VT. It's less of a hassle ironically.

I believe all I need is a bill of sale and odometer disclosure. They mention a VIN verification on the website, but that only seems to be if the vehicle is to be titled, which a Grom will not be in VT.

Re: Maine bike with no title transferring to NH

Is it possible to get a title in VT for it? If so, you might consider it, just to cover your bases and make it possible to transfer it to NH later.

Sometimes that sort of thing is worth it. For example, here in NH, if it's over 15 years old it doesn't need a title, but I titled all 5 of my old bikes here anyway, because I needed to send copies to CA to prove I had transferred them out of state and get the CA registration vultures off my back.

Quite possibly not, if he has a title in hand from another state that shows him to be the owner.

VT doesn't title it either since its under 300cc. But having the VT registration in my name should make getting a title easier in NH. I believe then all I will need in NH is a VIN verification.

Re: Maine bike with no title transferring to NH

you just need a VIN verification form. dont need state police, just a motorcycle inspection station. you may also need a "statement of fact" form as well. i went through all this with my KTM. no notary needed. takes 5 min. this is super easy. former reg is the hardest part. for me they accepted my off road reg
i can forward you the statement of fact form if you give me your email.

As I said in the original post, I don't have the previous reg, which is part of the problem. I only have a bill of sale.

Re: Maine bike with no title transferring to NH

just got off the phone with Katie at the DMV. she says the easiest route is:

get a dirt bike reg for it.
take dirt bike reg, and vin verification form to town hall.
    register.
    get plate.
    profit

i asked if you needed a statement of fact but she said no. id bring one just in case.
i asked if the bill of sale needed to be notarized. she said no.
