Mandated ABS and stability control for all motorcycles

The National Transportation Safety Board recently voted 5-0 to recommend thatall new motorcycles built for road use in the U.S. have anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control as standard equipment. The recommendation was made to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which has the authority to create the regulations.

Fun fact - last year, anti-lock brakes were standard on 8.9 percent of U.S. motorcycles and were optional on 13.3 percent.

Did they mandate that new bikes come with a free skirt and panties too?

I'm actually ok with ABS on my street bikes... but if I was buying a bike for track-duty that would suck.

I wish it wasn't mandated, but I don't mind that much.

However, I wish they'd make it easy and/or encourage manufactures to allow it to be defeated by the owner. And in a way that is a full true defeat, and persistent between power cycles. If you have an in-dash menu system that controls other shit, there's really no good reason not to have it as a menu option.

And before anyone says 'its for the insurance', they can sell it as a diagnostic or closed course mode.

It seems like Euro bikes allow you to shut off ABS (maybe an R1 you can too), but both my 636 and my previous CBR you could not (other than pulling a fuse). I think my cars (2 series and X3) also turn stability control back on when the car is started if you disabled it.

I don't mind the mandate even though I probably have lost a little finesse due to the electric nannies. Maybe need a dirt bike again to get some of it back.

Re: Mandated ABS and stability control for all motorcycles

I guess on the ZX10R kawi makes it a bit easier to defeat:

    ABS DONGLE

    Item# 13159-0023

    msrp$17.95

    share

With ABS Dongle installed, the rider can cancel rear wheel ABS function only or both front and rear by using the Meter Function switch located on the left handlebar
•When the ABS dongle is installed, ABS indicator light will flash when ignition is switched on and remain on during engine operation
•Cancels ABS function for track use only
•This part is NOT for race use or for use on public roads or highways
    •Not compatible with non-ABS models

Might be confusing regulations with recommendations.

On the VStrom ABS was $500. On my wife’s CB500F it was $300. GSX-R1000 is $400. GSX-R600 & 750 will have it available next year as well.

Europe decreed this for all road bikes over 250cc some time ago so market availability has greatly improved. It’s probably inevitable here as well.

Thank goodness, hopefully soon we won't even have to drive them ourselves, we'll just be wrapped in warm hugs and safely deposited at our destination.

Ah, another example of the Department of Redundant Duplication Department making .gov agencies. I'm finding the .gov need this so one dept can back up the other on stupid choices and justify their decisions.

You don't need the KTM dongle to disable ABS or traction control, you can do that through the menus. The dongle only saves the last state on engine restart.
