Mass. getting a title only, sales tax?

I recently bought a new race bike that actually has a clean title. The guy i bought it from signed the title rather than leaving it blank. I want to bring this to the DMV to get a new title in my name.

I want to get the title only and not register the bike do you guys know if I will need to pay sales tax? Im thinking sales tax is only when registering a new bike and not just titling anyone know for sure?

Titling a bike in your name is proof of sale therefore sales tax. You will have to pay. Keep the title signed into your name and if you ever decide to street it just do it then.

I have a buddy that owned a bike and never titled it in his name but when he sold it he had to and they made him pay the sales tax without registering it.

Yep thats when you pay saled tax, As long as the "seller" Did not fill your name on the Title or the date You should be fine I have bought and sold many roadbikes that the person selling it too me was not the same person who signed the title.

+1. Even if you don't reg, you would still be bringing the title to MA RMV so they can issue a new title in your name. When doing so, they will charge you sales tax. You get a receipt that looks similar to a registration slip, but no plate/reg # associated.

From what Mongoose is saying, sounds like you don't *have* to bring title in to get it in your name. However, I would assume it may be harder to prove the bike is yours if you lost the title (which isn't in your name).

Interesting. Well maybe I bought the bike for 1000 dollars then. As it is a race bike its value is not near street pricing. they do it based off purcahse value rather than blue book value right?

I think it depends on where you are. In RI the woman at the dmv just took my bill of sale and calculated tax from that.

what you pay doesn't matter, they have there own price list.

Not true here in MA. They've done both my car and bike based on what I paid. However, if it looks suspiciously low without good reason they may go by NADA. Guess it's kind of a discretionary thing.
