    MC license

So been riding on my permit and am anxious on getting my license now. My bike as some of you know, has had some modifications... No front fender, baffled exhaust and no mufflers.. Anyone take the test on a questionable bike?

In NH the tester made sure that you were either within 10 days of your registration or had a valid inspection.

He didn't question anything past that.

Can you even do figure 8s in a parking lot with the rake you have in the front end?

    Re: MC license

Just as an example, when I was trying to get my license back in '96 I had a bike that I had dropped while learning to ride which broke the nub off the end of the rear brake lever. I rode up to the inspection location and was about to take my test when the state trooper that was conducting the test looked over my bike and told me that he could not allow me to take the test on the bike I rode in on as the rear brake lever was broken. I proceeded to show him that I could still in fact utilize the rear brake but he still would not allow me to take the test. His explanation was that the bike had to pass all items that it would need to pass during an inspection. Seeing as state troopers (typically former registry cops) are the ones who give the test, one would think that they would know what is needed for a bike to pass inspection.

The kicker, he also told me that if my bike had been ok for the test he wasn't even going to have me do the test as he had watched me ride into the test location and after watching me ride he knew that I would have passed without issue. He just wasn't willing to take the risk of allowing me to take the test on an "unsafe" bike. If anything happened during the test that caused me to be injured he would be liable and didn't want any part of it.

Oh yeah, forgot to say that this was in Massachusetts

FYI, State Troopers no longer administer the riding test at the registry in MA. All done by registry employees/officials now.

Use a paperclip to hold the $100 bill to your appointment papers. You'll pass with flying colors.

    Re: MC license

If you've got the coin, take the full MSF course where they use their bikes. Since it's administered by the MSF people, you are pretty much guaranteed to pass and get your license even if you F up like 5 times. The only issue is they usually use nighthawk 250's or the like and the throttles on those things at low rpms are kinda twitchy.

Or see if you can barrow a bike for the test. I don't think it has to be your bike. I hear scooters are good for the tight stuff.

    Re: MC license

You get a ton of chances on the msf course for various mistakes. I am sure people have failed, but its not easy to fail...

And scooters do handle well in tight spaces. Its the smaller wheels and lower center of gravity.

Edit: the rmv course may be even easier than the msf course. I took the msf course to get license so I don't know about the rmv test.

I don't know how you people do stuff out there in the west but around here you can't make a ton of mistakes. if I remember correctly one fall on the test portion and you fail.

You get one chance at each of the 4 parts to the test. One only. You can make mistakes but you don't get re-do's. or at least you shouldn't.

    Re: MC license

Take the class its worth it although it does have its flaws. When you pass the "test" part youll get your license mailed to you without having to go to the registry. That is worth the price of the class itself. You will almost certainly pick up a tip or two about riding and you will save money on your insurance. If you do drop a bike over the time youre taking the class its not a big deal. Its their bike, its a pile of junk and its been dropped before. Its also light and easy to pick up plus the instructor will help out

When I took it which seems like forever ago we did have a woman crash but she did pass. The most frustrating thing to me about the class is they tend to lead people to believe they are learning how to ride a motorcycle. IMO people are learning how to operate a motorcycle. You cant really ride a motorcycle in a parking lot at speeds below 20. I think Degsy will remember the meeting we had a few years back on ideas about how to improve the course.
