    Metal supply store?

I need some bits and pieces for some stuff I need to weld. My google-fu seems week, though, as I can't find anything locally. I just need a few pieces of angle and maybe some sheet metal.

Any suggestions for where I should look?

If your just looking to practice, call up a scrap yard and see if you could buy a few bits off them,

There are a lot of small sheet metal/fab shops around the area. It can sometimes help to go somewhere and see what they have sitting around. If you get lucky, you can get scrap pieces for little to nothing.

Otherwise, yeah, you can get pieces at HD, Lowes, etc, it just isn't very cheap.

McMaster, TS and HD/Lowes are all VERY expensive compared to a metal supply shop. I'd lookup welding shops near you and start walking in with some cash in hand to explain what you are looking for.

many scrap yards sell new metal as well, I buy my rebar for property corners in 20ft lengths from a scrap yard

imho, Lowes, HD, Tractor Supply etc are outrageously expensive

If you're just looking to mess around on stuff, town recycle drop-offs might have some stuff you can take. Find your nearest town dump.

    Re: Metal supply store?

Lots of Home Depots have a small section of sheet metal angle and bar stock. But local is the way to go. Metal is heavy and shipping is extremely expensive. I did an update to my trailer with some expanded steel, square tubing and angle. It was going to cost me about as much as the materials in shipping from onlinemetalsdepot. McMaster will also probably charge an arm and a leg in shipping and they don't tell you online how much they're going to charge they are also about double what most local metal yards cost on the base price. I found a local place and they delivered all my metal for $20.

If your building tools or knives though you'll need tool steels which most metal yards don't carry or know what your talking about so McMaster or a major steel manufacturer like Cruicible Industries will be your resource. The metal yards just have low carbon structural steel and maybe some stainless.

I dont have any first hand experience buying steel but I did a workshop at the Steel Yard in Providence recently and the instructor recommended these two places:

    http://midcitysteel.com/

I've ordered from onlinemetals.com a couple of times. They have a pickup location in Wallingford CT.

Try to find a metal salvage yard that will let you pick through their piles. Based on experience, even buying scraps/cut offs from a dedicated supplier can be expensive, especially if you are just using it for practice.

    Was Nora your instructor?

Back on topic. In the Providence area both of those are good choices. Mid city has a division called the annex that sells surplus steel at reduced rates. I use them a lot for inseams and big tuning/pipe, but they have smaller stuff as well. There is also two scrapyards that will sell to public. Broomfield and sons on Allen's ave, and exeter scrap, which is farther south. Exeter has a whole section of the yard payed out with interesting pieces, everything from old farm implements to stainless laboratory cabinets and everything in between.

There's an outfit right near Artisan's Asylum in Somerville that caters to this sort of thing. I'll see if I can find them.

BTW AA is a great place if you want access to tons of industrial equipment: they have welders, brakes, grinders, drill presses, you name it.

I think we are around $.09 per lb +/- for our scrap A36 and A572 steel...just as a benchmark number for you to keep in mind. I would expect the smaller yards are probably selling scrap for double that (we scrap several thousand tons a year so it's bulk pricing)

That sounds very reasonable actually.. Where is this yard?

Metal supply store?-125-2545_img-jpgSorry, we contract with a scrap company and don't sell scrap or new steel to the public. I just wanted to point out a price-point so the OP would have some type of base info.
Most of the stuff we work with isn't suitable for the home guy anyway, it's heavy structural.
