Thanks, I had no idea even bulk prices could be that cheap! I think Turner Steel in W Bridgewater has a minimum order of $25 for pickup. At 10 cents per lb that would be 250 lbs. If the OP wants to buy, but doesn't need so much, I would be interested in some.

We got a couple of good places in the Worcester area for stuff like that, and some of them let you rummage around. I am lucky that I get into a lot of different machine and fab shops in my day job and if I need something usually all I need to do is offer to buy it and they hand it to me.

BTW AA is a great place if you want access to tons of industrial equipment: they have welders, brakes, grinders, drill presses, you name it.
I signed up for the Metal Intensive: February course at Artisan's Asylum. Should be good!

I was pleased with Metal Supermarkets in Woburn. I put together a lazy susan for my Triumph with some 1/8" steel plate

Is it worth doing this one (in January) as well? It's a one-dayer:

    Description:
MIG Welding (Gas Metal Arc Welding) is one of the easiest processes of joining two pieces of metal together. Basic MIG Welding is a class for the very beginner to the intermediate that's a little rusty on it. In this class you will learn proper set up of the machine, safety in welding and welding techniques/welding joints. At the end of this class you will understand how to produce a sound MIG weld on mild steel and also how to operate some of welding support equipment (grinders and chop saw).

    Class Goals:
For students new to welding or looking to refresh rusty skills, you'll leave this one-night class with the information you need to operate a MIG welder at Artisan's Asylum and create a sound weld.
Or should I just stick to the bigger course in Feb.

Should be able to do next weekend, 6'er of a choice IPA will do nicely. I have a shield and gloves you can wear for the short term. Saturday or Sunday morning will work either way, gotta be home for playoffs though. You'll have a quote inbound for your tile tomorrow am!

Metal fabrication shops are sympethetic toward the hobbiest looking to learn the trade. Stopping by late on Saturday morning with a six pack of Sam Adams doesn't hurt. They are not likely to let you crawl through the steel or alumunim dumpster (insurance) but the kid running the saw will usually pull a few choice pieces for you.
